Wesley Snipes postpones prison

Search: Wesley Snipes postpones prison

Movie star Wesley Snipes does not have to report to prison -- yet. The U.S. District Court judge who sentenced the "Blade" star to 36 months in prison in 2008 for tax-related crimes overruled a U.S. marshal who had sent the actor a letter directing him to report to the Bureau of Prisons no later than noon Sept. 2.

Re: MOVIE NEWS & Quick Questions

Box Office

It was all change at the box office over the weekend when The Last Exorcism swooped into the number one position. The Eli Roth produced frightener scared up $22.5 million despite complaints of a terrible ending.
Coming in a close second over the three days was Takers. The crime thriller which stars a slew of familiar faces like Hayden Christensen, Chris Brown and Matt Dillon grabbed $21 million worth of moviegoer’s cash in its unexpectedly successful debut.

Sly and the family Stallone dropped to three. After two weeks at the top The Expendablesbrought in another $9.5 million for an $82 million total – $100 million is now in its grasp.

Julia Roberts’ Eat Pray Love came in at four after grossing just under $7 million. The total for the film now stands at $60 million. It doesn’t have a chance of hitting $100 million, but it shows that Roberts still has some star wattage left.

The Other Guysshot up $6.5 million and upped their total to just under $100 million. Will Ferrell breathes a sigh of relief and audiences want more Michael Keaton. All’s fair in love and war.

Vampires do indeed suck and so does (I presume) Vampires Suck. It’s a film that I wouldn’t be caught (un)dead watching, but someone is as the film only dipped 55% from last weekend’s debut. I say only because that’s a pretty decent decline for this sort of film. Another $5.5 for this frightening movie gives it a respectable $28 million. Kids, save your money and go see Inception.

Speaking of Inception, it has now brought its total up to over $270 million, after banking another $5 million.

Nanny McPhee Returns grossed another $4.7 million and upped its total to $17 million. This film has already made its money on the international circuit, so its US release is just a formality. You may even expect Nanny McPhee Returns Again… or something.

The Switch just didn’t turn on moviegoers. The Jennifer Aniston/ Jason Bateman comedy has only brought in $16.4 million since its launch. It shouldn’t get to over $30 million.

Piranha 3Ddid what any good horror films does – and dropped by over 50% in its second weekend. The horror remake/ reboot/ reimagining or whatever the hell they’re calling it chewed up another $4.5 million. With just under $18.5 million in the bank a sequel is on the way. I expect that this will make a killing when it hits DVD in an unrated form.

Jim Cameron’s Avatar: Special opened at number eleven after scoring $3.8 million. The re-release of the highest grossing film of all time adds an extra 9 minutes of footage to the 3D epic. The film has now brought in a mind (and eye) blowing $753.5 million in the US alone. This Special Edition debut might be something of a disappointment for Cameron and Fox, however considering that the film is already out on DVD, with a double dip on the way – it’s pretty much all gravy at this point.

Re: MOVIE NEWS & Quick Questions

Box Office

George Clooney once again proved his movie star credentials by out grossing every other film in the top ten. The American should take in an estimated $16.5 million over the four day holiday weekend, giving the hit-man drama a total gross of $20 million. The film has received positive reviews (read Screen Rant’s here) but the marketing for the film is off the mark – The American is quite different than the film the ads appear to be selling. Will the movie have legs or will the Average Joe moviegoer be put off when they realize The American isn’t an action film? If a film like this gets to about $50 million it’s a success, so we’ll have to see this one plays out.

Robert Rodriguez’s Macheteshould slice up the competition to claim the number two position. The film which stars Danny Trejo, and features Steven Seagal, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan and 80s favorite Don Johnson (alongside his Nash Bridges co-star Cheech Marin) in supporting roles, should bank just under $15 million over four days. It’s hardly outstanding, but Rodriguez can make this type of film, despite the star power, on a small budget. Machete will be very profitable, despite mediocre reviews, (read Screen Rant’s here).

Takersis doing surprisingly well – for a film that sat on a shelf for a long time. The crime-thriller should score another $14.5 million over the long weekend, upping its cumulative to $40 million.

The Last Exorcism did what most horror movies do, and dropped more than 50% on its second weekend. The Eli Roth produced fright film should take in just under $10 million for a $34 million total. This will make a killing on DVD.

Drew Barrymore and Justin Long’s “are they? Or aren’t they?” real life romance failed to capture attention for Going the Distance. The romantic comedy appeared to offer nothing new to audiences and it should bank about $8.5 million over the weekend.

The Expendables should score just over $8 million this weekend, upping the Sly Stallone film’s total to around $94 million. It’s a winner for the action icon any way you look at it.

The Other Guys have now brought in a grand total of $108 million, while Julia Roberts’ Eat Pray Love now has a total of $70 million. It should top out at over $80 million, showing that Roberts still has appeal with audiences.

Christopher Nolan’s Inception continues to play, but it would seem that it’s winding down. Another $6 million has been stolen from the minds..er… pockets of moviegoers for a grand total of over $278 million.

Emma Thompson’s Nanny McPhee Returns rounded out the top ten, after grossing another $5 million. The film should get to $30 million, and have no problem finding an audience on DVD. A sequel should ensure a nice little pension for Thompson in later years.
