Re: This Is Us - NBC Tuesday

OK. I finally watched The Pilot.
Have to say I didn't see the twist till I saw the dad in front of the window.
Then again there was another li'l twist at very end with the 'triplets'.
So I guess we're going to see things progress in 2 different timelines.
I wouldn't say that loved it, but I'm intrigued enough to keep watching.
At this moment I'd say it's at a Parenthood level of interest.

This Is US will not be on tonight. It's being preempted by the Presidential debate.

Re: This Is Us - NBC Tuesday

Also watched the 2nd episode. Another unexpected twist at the end.
Hope they don't come to rely on that too much, tho. They did a good job in the pilot with wardrobe.
None of the clothes really gave away the twist. Did anyone catch Pitch?
It's by the same creator as this show. I just finished the pilot.
If you can get past the music & editing in the 1st 15 mins, it's worth checking out.

With the two timelines, it's a unique way to use flashbacks to tell the story of the triplets and their parents.

The "Present" timeline, allows us to follow each the triplets as adults. I'm really invested in Randall's story. His biological father's pending death, and how he's going to tell his daughters they have a new grandfather.

Kate comes in second. Really curious how TPTB are going to develop her story. I've heard, she's going on a "real" diet this season. Good luck to her!

Kevin still has to grow on me. His acknowledgement that he wasn't a very good brother has gone a long way in endearing him. But he needs to stop whining and get his life together.

Oh, and I really thought you'd enjoy the writing, Dawg. IMO, the writing is topnotch.

...
I agree 100%! I didn't see anything that would give the timelines away during the Premiere. Very well done.

So far, I'm liking the twists. But, I see your point. It could get old fast.

No offense, but top notch might be a bit overstated, tho.
I'd say, right now, it's on par with Parenthood writing wise.
To be fair there are some excellent shows on TV at the moment.

I think when you are breaking down TV series, you almost have to rate them on a sliding scale these days. Basically, either 1) Network, 2) Cable and 3) Pay Cable. What they can and can't do is so different, so the writing is different. Network is just so much less gritty because it has to be.

I don't agree. I think that both Hodge & I were referring to quality, not style.
And I don't think that a network show can't be excellent quality.
They just haven't been up to the level of some cable shows as of late.
However, West Wing was on network and is still IMHO the best show that's ever aired.
Also (more recently) The Good Wife for it's first 5 seasons was consistently one of the best shows on TV.

Re: This Is Us - NBC Tuesday

Well, IMO, TPTB (writers) hit it out the park last night. There were so many fabulous lines of dialogue, I can't list them all.

Another great "wow" moment. Rebecca knew Randall's (Kyle's) biological father. They'd even met. "Rebecca, you're looking well." My jaw hit the floor.

Also, when she told William, Randall is going to do any and everything to try and save him, even to the detriment of himself and his family, because, that's just the way he is.

I want to be Toby when I grow up! He's such a great guy, Kate would be hard pressed to find a better man.

I agree and I'm glad her brother realized how much Kate has been giving up on his behalf and took his neurotic self to New York without her.

I don't get this "psychic" connection between Kate and Kevin. I can understand such a connection between identical twins but not fraternal twins unless other members of the family seem to have a gift in that regard as well.
