Re: Gotham (FOX)

I enjoyed this episode more than the first. The penguin is exciting to watch. His persona reminds me of the leader of The Rogues gang form The Warriors (warriors come out and playeeyay).

There are a lot of moving parts and I like the way they're fitting together so far. When is this supposed to be set?

Re: Gotham (FOX)

Originally I was "meh", but now I'm hooked. LOL

The Penguin is currently the star of this show for now along with Jim Gordon.
Cat seems to be the sanest one on the show along with Jim Gordon's fiancée. I have not watched the Batman movies or read the comics. That old tv show with Adam West and Burt Ward is my only reference. I do not want Oswald to start honking like Burgess Meredith did. I like the depth of character the show is giving to its characters.

The appearance of Carol Kane and Oswald's mother is a great casting choice although, I do hope that "Latka" will not be his father. Oi Simka and Latka from "Taxi".

Re: Gotham (FOX)

Just watched the first ep so not reading the second ep stuff-- I want to watch the first again before the second-- wow I loved it! OK I have a major thing for Ben McKenzie-- I confess I suffered the entire series of The O.C. just to watch him and I am thrilled he got this role it suits him perfectly! When I first saw him I was immediately reminded of Bud White in L.A. Confidential-- one of Russell Crow's early US roles and one of my favorite films (and books). I don't think that is an accident; the dress and style and the type he is playing is an homage.
Have a look:

Not to mention the character of a straight young guy in a corrupt police force.
And the opening city street scene-- too easy-- Blade Runner anyone? The cinematography was great, I loved the wide shot of the police station and I thought: jane_eire needs to see this I wonder what she would make of it? I swear that the Major Crimes cops were going up the real courthouse steps in Manhattan; we've seen it enough time in Law and Order to recognize it.
Anyway I have not been a huge follower of Batman so on the one hand I am not burned out on the mythos, but on the other I may miss stuff. The Jim Gordon character and Harvey Bullock are new aren't they? That gives them some freedom to operate around the known characters in a new way. Is Fish Mooney new? Loved Jada in that role.

Right there with you, MsMillie.

I wonder also if Fish Mooney is a new character? ..............And I see written that she is a "new villain".
Now I want to know all the comic book villians associated with Batman.

Re: Gotham (FOX)

Yeah I have to rewatch to see who the peeps here thought might be the Joker and the Riddler. And the Mayor-- something is up with him. I want to pay more attention to the detail too.

Re: Gotham (FOX)

I went out to wiki because I wanted to know potentially how many villans there were in Batman's world. I counted close to 300. The funniest one was named Condiment King. lol He was just a minor adversary that was easy disposal for Batman.

Re: Gotham (FOX)

Harvey Bullock has been around awhile. Long standing character with plenty of backstory to pull from.
Fish Mooney is new for the TV show, but squeezing her in to the muddled mess of villains that Gotham has always had shouldn't be too difficult. She will be the tie that binds them all together somehow.

As far as who the villains are, Edward Nygma IS the Riddler. In the show, he obviously hasn't become the Riddler yet, but that's him. Great casting, too. That guy just looks unbalanced. I can't wait to see him go nuts on the show, and excited to see what drives him to it.

I have a feeling I know who the Joker is, but it completely flies in the face of the "usual" storyline and origin story. BUT there have been many origin stories for the Joker, and there isn't one that DC considers THE origin, which makes for some good debate. All I know is, I doubt that kid that Mooney hired will be the Joker thanks to episode 2.

Selina Kyle IS Catwoman, and that's already obvious.

Barbara Gordon is usually Batgirl, but the Barbara on the show is still Barbara Kean right now, and will be a little old when Bruce becomes Batman, so who knows if they pull that thread or if it's just a red herring.

I loved Carol Kane as Penguin's mom. She always plays muddled-crazy better than anyone. I hope we see more of her.

Re: Gotham (FOX)

Thanks Map! I rewatched the first ep and noticed a lot of detail. There is great interspersing of iconic Manhattan landmarks with CGI Gotham. I don't know New York city all that well so you New Yorkers out there keep an eye out for us. I spotted the Brooklyn Bridge during the rooftop chase of Pepper, and the Waynes' funeral takes place at Calvary Hill on Long Island, in Queens (I have relatives buried there). I love the attention to this because Gotham City is an important character, with personality and interaction with the other characters.
Can anyone do screen shots?
When they showed the entrance to Fish's place, there were some campaign posters on the wall of the Mayor with the motto "He's got your back".
Anyway on to ep 2 now!
