Re: NFL Thread Pt. II

Hey now, the Lions and Saints both have potentially explosive offenses.

Other than that, i gotta agree that it's been a strange year, and you didn't even mention the anthem nonsense.

gift cards make great gifts both for shoppers who are lazy and/or have a lot of gifts to buy. They're also a shrewd choice if there are individuals in your life for whom it is difficult to shop. When bought through the astore, they also help support this site, which isn't self-sufficient and doesn't hold fund-raisers or any of that other crap.

Please consider doing at least some of your holiday shopping through our astore this year.

This is normal.

I thought it was weird when all the hubbub with Trump made the anthem a huge focus. Aside from big games like the Super Bowl, Conference Championships, or (maybe) the season Opener, the anthem really doesn't get played on TV. I mean, regular season games usually have some high school kid who maybe sort of did well on some TV show coming out and doing an admirable job with the song, but at 12:55 on a Sunday, the TV heads are busy going around the league with sideline reporters and giving last minute fantasy advice. And this used to apply to even Sunday and Monday night games. It's normal to NOT see it on TV before a football game.

This really applies to most national broadcasts of sports in general. Aside from the BIG games (Stanley Cup, World Series, NBA Championships), nationally broadcast games are usually in the studio doing the same thing they do before football games when the anthem is playing: "Keys to the Game", injury impacts, etc.

That being said, NESN, which broadcasts Red Sox and Bruins games locally, pretty much ALWAYS shows the anthem. Rene Rancourt is a New England treasure, but his vocal talents aren't exactly in the same class as Pavarotti, but they broadcast his performance every friggin' homegame. I love him, but yikes, he's no Trey Anastasio.

And the Red Sox play 162 games a season, 81 at Fenway. Their performers don't even need to be on a TV show to get the nod. They could have performed in a musical version of Waiting for Godot with their 8th grade Math Team, but somehow, here they are singing at Fenway. On TV all over New England. All are decent, and some deserve the spot, but man, there are some clunkers. In NESN's defense, Red Sox coverage starts about two hours before first pitch, so there's a lot of time to fill. Cut to the anthem. Remy needs to take a piss.

And NBA games? Same thing. Local coverage might play the anthem (Celtics is hit or miss depending on the start time), but national broadcasts rarely play it. The spectacle of player introductions generally takes the broadcast time away.

So yeah.
No anthem before football is normal.

Re: NFL Thread Pt. II

NESN copied that format from their big brother YES.

Yankee games on ESPN radio used to carry the anthem too. They may still, it's just been a really long time since i listened to a game on the radio.
