Re: What's New/Countdown to Thanksgiving

I'm at Professional Development today, which is like the 10th circle of hell.

It's supposed to go until 3:30 and I really wanted to leave at like, 2:30.

Then I'm looking at the agenda for today, and it's saying that the "Close - Post test" is from 1:45 - 2:00, and there is nothing after that.

Does that mean that we actually leave at 2? Because that would be much better.

Like a lot better.

It's a "STEM labs workshop" and it's taking place at my old Middle School in Deltaville (several counties attending, and they happened to pick this county to host it).
So I just stayed after at my mom's house last night so I wouldn't have to drive in the morning. Most of the rest of the people from the school where I work, were going to come in on a bus (about an hour ride).

The bus hasn't gotten here yet. I'm the only person from my school here. This is awkward.

Professional development the Saturday before Thanksgiving??? Who thinks that is a good idea??
On the up side, you got to spend time with your mom, and maybe you'll garner a good tidbit or two, and I hope you are out of there at 2:00.

Re: What's New/Countdown to Thanksgiving

Found a good deal on some nice looking fresh beets this morning. Looks like i'll be making harvard beets this year. That'll be nice, we haven't had those in a few years, it'll be a nice surprise for my mom.

I can totally identify with the huge family, although we don't generally gather in large groups for holidays. My step-father is one of 12 kids, and three of his siblings married into similarly sized families. The reunions can be nuts, but only 400 showed up for the last one a few years ago. Last year my uncle John threw a Christmas Eve party that had a little over a hundred people show up. Around three years ago one of my step-father's brothers passed away and around 500 showed up for the memorial service. We usually rent out the local Sportsmens' Club for stuff like that, it can hold several hundred inside and has an even bigger pavilion.

I would totally think that, especially if she had frozen it first, because frozen Snickers bars are the best. #HalloweenForLyfe

Agree with Warty about dark meat being the best.

I'm planning to serve a platter of grilled salmon heads (eyeballs in). One daughter and her boyfriend are vegetarian, so a basic slab o' salmon seemed like a good idea, until I ran into my neighbor Dante, who is from Palau. Dante says there's a lot of tasty stuff in salmon jowls and that the eyeballs aren't bad, once you get used to the texture.

Re: What's New/Countdown to Thanksgiving

Mo, are Harvard beets roasted? I love roasted beets. The only thing we do that's different is to serve two kinds of cranberries: one using actual berries served hot (very easy to make), and the other the jelled blob straight out of the can, with the can markings intact, in honor of growing up in the midwest.

We're just having the two vegetarians as guests. Instead of just tidying the house, I sort of lost it (like in the den, cleaning all the shelves and books, even the top ones that no one can see or reach, and the top of armoire, also too high for anyone to see). Plus pulling everything out of everywhere to clean and reorganize. Plus some incidents involving Q-tips and vinegar. Now everything's a gigantic mess, except for the books, the armoire, and some kitchen drawers, my dresser and my closet shelves, which are all currently empty -- but also clean, gogdamnit.

No, harvard beets are a sweet and sour dish. I also love roasted beets, i like to add turnips and parsnips and potatoes - i call the dish Root Down in honor of the Beastie Boys.

Without breaking out my recipe book, i think this is pretty close to my recipe: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/92773/g...harvard-beets/ two key differences are that i use brown sugar (need more but it's a nicer flavor imo) and fresh beets not canned, which take a little longer to cook, so you need a little more water too.

We do this too. I eat both kinds. I'm pretty sure none of us grew up in the midwest, though.
