Re: What [anime] are you watching?

Another that I watched, had a shorter run, only ten episodes, was Children of the Whale. I forget the Japanese title, don't feel like looking it up. I am still trying to figure out if it was good or not...

The writers put a lot of world-building into a show that didn't even have a full season run. It's set aboard a ship made of stone that floats on a sea of sand. Not a desert, they can't get out and walk around, but sand that is like water. The community aboard the ship is very small, less than 200, and they are in two classes: those who can use magic to manipulate objects and those who have no magic ability. The magic users far outnumber the non-magic users, but the also have very short life expectancy, no more than their mid-20s. So the magic users do the heavy lifting and the non-magic workers become the elders once they have reached a certain age and everyone gets along.

This bucolic lifestyle is disrupted when they encounter another ship adrift. Everyone there is dead save one person, a teenaged girl with blue hair. This leads to the ship being attacked by another ship, one made of metal full of soldiers who retreat after a brief skirmish, telling the people they shall return in three days to kill everyone, make your preparations to be annihilated.

So why the quandary on whether this is a good anime or not? Right there so far I have stated the outline for a solid adventure story in a fantasy setting. The world works withing it's own confines, even if it is "different". As for the characters, overall they are well done, no real issues. Where I am hitting a snag comes when we learn the reason for the attack. without going into fine detail it nearly puts the show into a being a geopolitical fable for modern day Japan, pacifist and contented, suddenly confronted with the loose cannon of North Korea threatening missile launches.

Japan paid a heavy price in the first half of the Showa Era for a decision made late in the Meiji to get into Europe's Great Game of Colonial Imperialism. That price could have been much, much higher had the bombs not been dropped and the Allied Forces needed a full invasion of the Japanese Home Islands to elicit a surrender from the Military Dictatorship. The mass-media of the late Showa is almost a laughable repeat of the poetry of the early Tokugawa Era, when people who had never seen comrades die in battle wrote of the glory of sacrificing one's self for the Emperor, no small contributing factor in Japan's defeat in the Pacific Theater of the War, to quote Patton "You don't win wars by dying for your country. You win wars by making some other son-of-a-bitch die for his." People whose fathers and grandfathers had lived the bitter failure of Japan's imperial aspiration but had no personal experience with war itself concocted fantasies about besting intractable foes with "culture". Uh-huh. I am sure that Kim Jong-un will never drop a nuke on Tokyo so long as AKB-48 is there to save the day.

The Japanese people realize this, and it shows in their output of anime and manga. Gate:And the JSDF Fought On is an ode to the JSDF which would have been unthinkable during the Showa Era. Gargantia on the Verderous Planet and [/b]Attack on Titan[/b], if you read the manga beyong the aired anime as I have, are both geopolitical fables...

Spoiler: Attack on Titan manga

The background we have not gotten yet in the anime is that the people inside the walls are the last descendants of the nation which created the Titans as a weapon of war and turned them against the rest of humanity. For their crimes they were imprisoned on an island within the walls and Titans, their own creations, running free outside. So, the Titans are not running about over the whole world, just that island, and humanity is trying to recover from the devastation.

The latter decades of the Showa Era was a time of prosperity in Japan and the anime was good, but a product of society settling towards complacency. Te Heisei Era, which will be ending soon, has been one of turmoil, and as such has produced some great anime as people responded to the changes in the economic climate. Ghost in the Shell. Black Lagoon, [b[Knights of Sedonia[/b], Bleach, all great animes whose plot theme were essential creations of the Heisei Era.

But all that rant aside, I am still on the fence about Children of the Whale...

Re: What [anime] are you watching?

Winter season has just started but we might just have a winner here...Sora yori mo Tooi Basho Eng A Place Further Than The Universe. Tamaki Mari is just into her second year of High School and struck by the realization that nothing she wants out of her school life is going to happen. Literally struck, because the hardcover diary she started on the first day of high school falls from the shelf over her bed and hits her head, it contains only a short list of three things she wants to do in her high school life in the first page, the rest of the pages are blank. It's not even a grand list, one of them is "Skip school just once", another is "Go on a journey once without a plan", but she has done none of these, and in class she bemoans this to her BFF, the bespectacled Takahashi Megumi, AKA Megu-chan (there's a pun there). It always comes down to her getting cold feet at the last moment, no matter how much she wishes to do something, anything, and this is shown when Megumi covers for her attempt to skip school for the day. But that evening, after classes, when the two girls have discussed the day's failures and said their good'-byes at the commuter rail station the event that changes everything for Mari occurs.

As she walks up the stairs to the platform a girl in the uniform of her school with long hair and a large bag runs past her, brushing her briefly with the bag. Something falls from it. I suppose in some animes this would be a talisman which unlocks a portal to another dimension and sends the heroine on an adventure where she kills 50,000 demons while waving a wand while wearing a shrine maiden robe and finds true love. Not happening here. Instead it's a money envelope containing ONE MILLION YEN!!! and getting it back to the proper owner the next day on limited clues brings her to meet the school's laughingstock, Kobuchizawa Shirase. Shirase's mother authored a photo book on Antarctica and then vanished. She is saving the money for so that she can join an expedition to a former JSDF facility, now run by civilians. Her motivation is to try to find out how her mother vanished so she ignores the taunts of the other girls. Mari is moved by her resolve and accepts her invitation to join her on the trip...for no other reasons than that she has always backed out on everything before because they didn't seem important and because Shirase really needs someone there with her.

So far (Ep 3 just aired) it's really good, the characters are well constructed, there is nice momentum, I hope it continues like this. One note: Mari's VA is Minase Inori. For those of you with good ears for such things, she voiced Hestia in Dungeon no Dei, Rem in Re:Zero, and Chino in Gotchumon wa Isagi Desu ka. I guess she's had a thing for the color blue so far??? More recently she voiced Chii in Shojo Shumatsu Ryoko.

Seconded. It seems like it will be the best show of the season. On a side note, as cheerful and genki as it is, there is a dark note lurking. Namely, there's NO way the one girl's mother is still alive. So even if they do make it down there, the expedition is doomed.

Without looking up the title, the girls go camping one seems like a close second.

All it showed is a brief clip of the mom's friend in a Snow Cat (sort of like a tracked Winnebago) losing radio contact with her in a blizzard. That's enough.

I was in the Job Corps in the mid-Eighties. Guy I was in a room with for a while, Rudy Esmailka, was from one of the villages on the Yukon downstream from Fairbanks. One day (I use the term loosely) in January a few years after he left Job Corps he headed out on his snowmobile (snow machine, as they are called in the 49th State) and "went missing" wasn't found until spring, several miles from his machine. They worked out that it broke down, he tried to walk back and took a wrong turn. Compared to Antarctica, Alaska is Paradise on Earth.
