Alice was a superhero? All these years i thought she was just having a (mostly) bad trip.

And as fun as it is to see Lou Ferrigno wearing a neck ruff... well, i guess that makes the rest of it worth it.

When bought through the astore, they also help support this site, which isn't self-sufficient and doesn't hold fund-raisers or any of that other crap.

Please consider doing at least some of your holiday shopping through our astore this year.

Re: In honor of Geek Pride Day (5/25)....

This makes me very, very happy:
"Native Tribes of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and Canada have oral traditions going back time immemorial, that place them in the region from the beginning. Now a genetic study of ancient skeletons and existing tribes shows that the unwritten history was apparently just so."
(source)

We have all been taught that native narratives (regardless of which natives we talk about) are, inherently, fantasies with no basis on reality. This idea, enforced explicitly and implicitly through formal teaching, as well as informally through literature and art, reinforces a mythical idea of Western supremacy.

It is lovely to see science prove that, no, indeed, native narratives are just as based on fact, as Western mythology--if not more.

Re: In honor of Geek Pride Day (5/25)....

I was taught that oral history is just as likely to be accurate as written history.

But that is still a very cool story, and nice to know that science has validated oral tradition. It's not the first time that oral history has been validated by archaeology, but it's the first time i've heard of it happening in North America.

In an awesome intersection of interests...

Watch John Williams, during the ceremony where he received an honorary doctors' degree from Harvard, be serenaded by an all-male a capella group:

How many can you name?

Via Atlas Oscura, a wonderful piece on 'movable' books (the precursor to the modern pop-up book):
Before the 17th century, Rubin says, movable books were used for texts on medicine and astronomy. “Movable books, as far as we know, started in the 12th century,” she says. The earliest example is a manuscript dating to 1121, titled Liber Floridus, that illustrates the orbits of the planets around the Earth. The top part of the page folds up, a gatefold, to reveal the complete illustration.
