Richard III

Big day for Richard III fans. BIG day.

First, the background:

Richard has a historically bad reputation, and many people blame Tudor propagandists, especially their chief toady, Shakespeare. The Richard III Society just wants the truth, and supports research into the life and times of the last British king to die on the battlefield.

Many of us become Ricardians by reading "Daughter of Time," a mystery by Josephine Tey. Others may be getting there after reading "Game of Thrones," which was partly inspired by the Wars of the Roses, and pits the Starks (Yorks) against the Lannisters (Lancasters). [Remember that Richard was "this son of York," which means he was a Stark and thus a good guy. ] [Plus other GoT shoutouts, but don't get me started.]

SO, archaeologists digging under a parking lot in central England found a skeleton in the ruins of a medieval church. The back of the skull had been cleaved and an arrowhead was lodged in the back (TYPICAL of a Tudor to shoot someone in the back, which was NOT hunched, btw). They will test mitochondria from a direct descendant of Richard's sister to confirm whether these are his remains.

On the extremely off chance that not everyone wants to talk about Richard III, feel free to use this thread to discuss any other hopelessly obscure passions you may harbor.

"... the purpose and indeed the strength of the Richard III Society derive from the belief that the truth is more powerful than lies - a faith that even after all these centuries the truth is important. It is proof of our sense of civilised values that something as esoteric and as fragile as reputation is worth campaigning for."

I love Shakespeare, so this might be a bit awkward here.

Re: Richard III and Other Passions

It's a great play, especially if you look at it as a comedy. But everybody had to be careful around the Tudors.

Re: Richard III and Other Passions

I had just watched The Tudors last night and the episode I caught was an early King Henry while he was still with his original queen and dallying with Ann Bolyn.
His sister died of consumption and he didn't even know she was sick.

Oh wait, that is not Richard.
I'm so lax on Brit history.
However lax I am, I do recognize the names of York and Tudor and Lancaster and Windsor. It is amazing how long these surnames have been in the English history.

They're German. This is what comes of shooting Richard III in the back. You end up with a bunch of Germans running things.

Richard was Henry VIII's great-uncle.

Which one of Henry's wives was famous for the laid back way she entered royal palaces ? The second one - she just used to amble in.

What was the first thing Richard III did upon ascending to the throne?
He sat down.
