Re: Warty's Sandman FR

I haven't read the extra things yet.

I will, but they aren't needed to understand the story, in my own experience.

Re: Warty's Sandman FR

I am admittedly taking this slow. Read.. look.. re-read.. flip back.. and I have to wait until everyone has gone to sleep (poignant) before I start each night.

So I am done with Imperfect Hosts and will begin Dream a little Dream tonight.

I don't have much to say about Hosts.. Cain and Abel.. interesting choice of names.

"But he was starting to feel better" lol

The Hecateae... their juxtaposition in the art was interesting. The maiden, the mother, and the crone... or maybe one of them is Cynthia.. Also a brief mention of The Justice League.

So I guess it's on to Earth to begin recovering tools.

Re: Warty's Sandman FR

Going to once again steal what I wrote on Ness's thread:

Chapter 2, "Imperfect Hosts"

"Abel had been dead for a couple of hours now. But he was starting to feel better."

All of the mirrored dialogue. I feel like we should have Jane here, because she's good at that.
Morpheus tells C&A, "I have been imprisoned" as we switch to the asylum where Dr. D is imprisoned. That scene ends "Mrs. D, say goodbye" and on the next panel, Abel says goodbye to Morpheus.
"This will be an uphill quest" Morpheus thinks, followed by Abel reviving and climbing the hill back to his house.

And you meet Lucien, still wandering about Morpheus's ruined palace. the librarian

Abel steals the show in this one, though. "I'm not crying. I'm really not crying. It's only blood, little brother. Only blood."

As much as you can tell that Gaiman doesn't quite know where he's going with the story, at the point, it's amazing how wonderfully introduced some of the characters are.

As they say, they are from the First Story.

Stories are part of the Dreaming.

Re: Warty's Sandman FR

They're not separate.
Spoiler: the fact that i should have to tag this should speak for itself
You're familiar with Dream's older sister, Death. These are stories which have a direct bearing on the Sandman tale; are written by Gaiman; and revolve around an Endless character who is, in her own way, more likable than Morpheus. Furthermore, the specific conversations in the books between Death and Dream have considerably weight as the series evolves.
No specific spoilers were divulged, and no pumpkins were maimed in the editing of this post.

I'm not saying you won't enjoy Sandman without them. You could skip them and never even know what you missed. It is my personal opinion, strongly held, that you would enjoy Sandman EVEN MORE if you read the Death books as though they were part of the Sandman series, and in the chronological order in which they were published. I believe that Mr. Gaiman intended his audiences to do so, too, if that matters.

This is true. I think that reading the Death books enhances the exerience as a whole, but it's definitely not required reading.

The two books between The Wake and Overture: The first is a great stand-alone story with exquisite art, but it has NOTHING to do with the major plots. The second is also a great stand-alone, but it does tie in a little to a minor plot line, and it's only a retcon.

The other "extra things" aren't even written by Gaiman. Book of Dreams is basically minimally enjoyable crap. The Dreaming is a little better, but not by much. I think vonne might like it because...

Spoiler: The Dreaming casting spoiler
Matthew the Raven is a major character in it.

____

As for Cain and Abel...

Part of this is Gaimn bowing to pressure to tie-in with DC universe, though he's doing it in a slightly subversive way. These are the Cain and Abel from Alan Moore's run writing Swamp Thing. I the storyboards he specifically directs the artist to use likenesses as close to those as possible, But he's also claiming them as Dream's, because they're archetypes, and stories are always part of The Dreaming.

ETA: Iirc Jane loves Sandman, and what Campbell fan wouldn't. I'm sure she'd LOVE to be here, but she is insanely overbooked; see the Doctor Who Fantasy League Thread for definitive evidence thereof.

Mo, your post re: Death is kind of a spoiler.

Re: Warty's Sandman FR

at your edit.

I don't think Warty has met any pumpkins yet, either, but I suppose that is more of a tease than anything.

Pumpkins = #SandmanHasThat
