LOST Theories So you think you know some secrets of the island? Maybe you can explain everything. If it's original and you can back it up, we'd love to hear it.

Re: + YUNG23s all in one place MAP THREAD

I seem to remember an Arabian Nights tale where Sinbad's ship lands on what appears to be an island only to discover that it's a sea monster. Not sure it was a turtle.

There is also the following poem by J.R.R. Tolkien with the same basic story involving a turtle:

Look, there is Fastitocalon!
An island good to land upon,
Although 'tis rather bare.
Come, leave the sea! And let us run,
Or dance, or lie down in the sun!
See, gulls are sitting there!
Beware!

There are many monsters in the Sea,
But none so perilous as HE,
Old horny Fastitocalon,
Whose mighty kindred all have gone,
The last of the old Turtle-fish.

LOVE your literary input! but when Yung returns to this thread, he'll probably be horrified at how I corrupted it with my turtle post...but the island does look like one!

<Liz braces herself for Yung's scolding...>

Re: + YUNG23s all in one place MAP THREAD

what is this ? are you the little old lady from a brief history of time ?

(in the book, hawking mentions an older woman who stood up during one of his lectures and suggested we all had it wrong, and the world was nothing more than the back of a giant turtle...

so Hawking asks her what this turtle was standing on...

and she replied "dont be silly, its turtles all the way down...

(this is not a true story, but one of hawking BS metaphors no doubt, this idea goes back to plato etc)

so if the island is a turtle.. what is smokey ?

bad gas ?

I believe the idea predates Plato who was a bit smarter than this.

But hey, it's not a lecture hall where you run out of time. In this world, a jacked thread is still a bumped thread.

WELL SAID, Fourtoes, and Yung, I thoroughly enjoyed your clever retort! I knew I'd get a scolding, but this was actually fun! I LOVE IT! and yes, hey, we're keeping your thread up there at the top of that turtle heap, you know.

Two weeks to LOST returns, baby, and I can't wait to see if we get any fresh views of the island (dutifully crawling back to the Map theme )

Re: + YUNG23s all in one place MAP THREAD

heres the article..

and fourtoes, I was just rounding off to show its pretty damn old, kinda like the "world is a stage" ideas.. those were from plato I think..

Quote:

"Turtles all the way down" refers to an infinite regression belief about the nature of the universe (see Cosmology). The most widely known version today appears in Stephen Hawking's 1988 book A Brief History of Time, which begins with an anecdote about an encounter between a scientist and an old lady:
Quote:

A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.
At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise."
The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?"
"You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!"

Re: + YUNG23s all in one place MAP THREAD

damn you two for bringing it up..
(now I am googling it to find its history)

"When the Turtle Collapses, the World Ends"

cmon, thats sounds a little lost to me..

the fact is has Dharmic history is VERY intriguing...

Quote:
This version may be a reference to various Hindu beliefs, including the myth that Vishnu's second avatar was Kurma, a tortoise on whose back the Mandara mountain rested, or that the tortoise Chukwa supports the elephant Maha-pudma who upholds the world.
A whimsical allusion to this myth appears in Wilfrid Sellars' 1956 Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind:
authoritative nonverbal episodes... would constitute the tortoise on which stands the elephant on which rests the edifice of empirical knowledge.
Justice Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court discussed his "favored version" of the tale in a footnote to his plurality opinion in Rapanos v. United States (decided June 19, 2006):
In our favored version, an Eastern guru affirms that the earth is supported on the back of a tiger. When asked what supports the tiger, he says it stands upon an elephant; and when asked what supports the elephant he says it is a giant turtle. When asked, finally, what supports the giant turtle, he is briefly taken aback, but quickly replies "Ah, after that it is turtles all the way down."

now a map image to end this poetic...

(I am not saying this is how things are, but its a cute idea for a hiatus threadjack...jk..)

Yung, what you have dug up is really cool, and even more applicable than I even guessed! We already know how the producers love to give nods to classical literature all throughout LOST. Maybe they desiged the island to look sort of like a sea turtle to do just this, to give a sort of nod, to see if any alert ones out there (ahem....here we are!) would pick up on it. Especially the Dharmic history, now that is unbelievable.

I love the turtle map, it has a peaceful quality about it...poetic, like you said

Re: + YUNG23s all in one place MAP THREAD

note to all.. I really lengthened the crater to create the landscape we all see in the distance from the second losties camp.

this may be why it looks more like a turtle.

(want me to make the island a pretty giraffe now ?)

or paste nemo and the blue fish, dorie ? on the island... dudes
