Re: What [anime] are you watching?

They finally got the first first episode of the second season of Dungeon no Deai out. Pretty good, but it's actually a flashback showing how it came to be that Bell was facing off against a minotaur which should not have been in area with low-level adventurers. Hope the rest of the series isn't flashbacks.

S2 of Shingeki no Kyojin is burning it up. There are some others I am watching, if they stay good I will post on them, but after mostly tepid offerings the last couple of seasons it feels like a feast. The folks have chosen this Spring Season to hit the viewers with a load of shows which are new, fresh, eschewing of the old conventions, have better attention to detail.

Here's one which seems interesting, and different. It's a school romance with none of the standard Josei cliches...meaning there are no BL overtones, sorry about that. Tsuki ga Kerei takes place in a middle school. The school year has just started and Kotarou and Akane are classmates for the first time with their Third Year beginning. The two have nothing in common, Kotarou is bookish and wants to be a writer, Akane is athletic, a great sprinter. Standard case of opposites attracting? Of course, but you all should know my mantra by now. Well, "Characters, characters, characters.", yes, but the other mantra is "Execution is everything", and so far this one seems to be done neatly.

As I said, I will post on anything else really good, but there is a LOT early on showing promise.

Where are you watching this one? I have been having trouble finding it.

This one seemed okay, but I think it will depend a lot on where it goes.

Have you watched Kado: The Right Answer? It seems like it may well be the winner for the season. It is smart and intriguing high-concept science fiction. After much establishment in the first episode, we find the Earth is suddenly visited by an alien cube. Think The Day The Earth Stood Still meets The Langoliers, only good.

There is also Sakura Quest, the new one from PA Works. It is the story of a young lady out of college having trouble landing her first job. She winds up working at a tourist trap in the middle of nowhere.

The first episode of Dungeon just showed up on Anime Freak dot TV a couple of days ago.

Kado, and Sakura Quest, yes to both.

Another one starting off well is Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records, English title Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor. Let's just call it Akashic Records, although that makes it sound like a music anime. It's about a 20-something slacker who gets strong-armed into becoming a temporary substitute at the Magic Academy he once dropped out of. It's from Kadokawa, and they seem to have left their standard formula of "bounce / jiggle / pantsu / aqueous plot" in the old servers or something.

Alice to Zorukou is about a little girl with the ability to do anything she wants to, so long as she is fed. She's just escaped from a research facility and is hiding with a florist and his granddaughter. It might just be one of those shows with internal consistency issues, but it's intriguing so far.

Re: What [anime] are you watching?

Okay, something around 2/3 mark of the Spring Season, thought I would make mention of how the shows I am watching are going.

Surprisingly, I haven't dropped any. Might point out that I did drop the latest installment of YowaPeda halfway through last season, but only because for show's tedious pacing. At some point I will sit down and binge-watch.

Sakura Quest is just so much fun. It's not the setting or the situation. It's the characters. The writers don't dwell over-long on any of the supporting cast but they have kept them consistent. This allows for little moments of subtle humor. This is Slice-of-Life anime done right.

Kado...Major wow. Alien from another universe, a so-called "Anistropic Being" (I wonder where they dug up that term for the translation of what he is called in Japanese) wants to help humanity progress. The results are almost predictable to anyone who has read or seen plenty of science fiction. Quite a few people are excited about the prospects, others are opposed, especially when their interests might be threatened. The "Human Equation" involved is done right here, makes for some good storytelling.

Akashic Records Looks like the folks at Kadokawa have learned something. It's not a great anime but at least it's not a puff piece. I have always thought that one of their strengths is giving the characters background-driven motivation. A viewer just had to wade through a ton of ecchi to get to it. With the ecchi gone it becomes more central which is what makes for something worth watching.

The season of [b]Dungeon no Deai[b] is in fact a parallel tale to the first season. But that's fine. It centers on the Loki Familia, prominent in the tale, and particularly Ais Wallenstein, the "Sword Princess" that hero adventurer Bell Craniel admires. It also fills in a lot of gaps in the backgrounds, occasionally shows the same scenes from a slightly different angle or with more information, and fills in the world a bit deeper. At about episode seven I went back and rewatched the first season, so far as I can tell the two are paced at about a 1:1 speed.

Shingeki on Kyojin is better than the first season, if that's possible. How is that? Remember the movie The Rock where Nicholas Cage played a chemical warfare specialist and Sean Connery was a James Bond-esque British agent who had screwed up so badly that HM's people had "pinged" him? The notable thing about that movie was that the action sequences were close together and when one ended the set-up for the next one began immediately. That is what is happening with this season of Titan, to give the English. The viewers already know the world dynamic so there is no need to waste two or three episodes on expository plot. The facing is frenetic, the action is not toned down one iota, and the reveals are shocking.

More shows in the next post.

Re: What [anime] are you watching?

End of the Spring Season notes on the shows in the previous post:

Sakura Quest ended it's first cour on a down note. The first major setback after six months of unlikely successes has made the lead character come to the conclusion that no real progress has been made in the goal of reviving the town through tourism so she packs her bags and heads off to the train terminal. A nice bit of storytelling. has me looking forward to the second cour.

Kudo Wow...Things took an incredible turn right after I posted the previous time, the show went from very good to great, and then wrapped neatly.

Akashic Records. Ended open-ended, but with the main story arc tied up. Not a bad way to spend a few hours of you wish to binge-watch the series.

Dungeon no Deai - Sword Oritoria This actually wrapped about three episodes before Dungeon no Deai, with a brief post-script afterwards. Watch it after the first series because it ties up a lot of loose threads.

Shingeki no Kyojin Great action all the way to the end, but details which will leave you wondering what is out there beyond the walls. I did some reading ahead in the manga and there really is not a lot of action forthcoming in the next several chapters but there are a lot of explanations, most of them unsavory.

Finally, my award for Anime of the Season:

It goes to one I have not mentioned. Tsuki ga Kirei English title "As the Moon, So Beautiful". A simple school love story. Kotarou is bookish, wants to be a writer, practices for a part in the local temple's festival parade float in is spare time. Akane is a star on the track team, has a small stuffed...something...she plays with when she is nervous to calm herself. It's the beginning of Third Year of Middle School and these two opposites find themselves in the same class for the first time, and notice one another for the first time. A chance encounter away from school, an act of kindness during assigned duties, these lead to attraction, then eventually love. What makes it work is that it's neatly told, a tale of two young people falling in love, insecure, not certain of how they are supposed to act or react. It's Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shiitai without the extraneous lightshow.

Re: What [anime] are you watching?

Summer season seems to be off with a wimper. I guess after a Spring season choc-full of enjoyable shows it was bound to happen.

One returning series is New Game, the pathologically innocuous comedy slice-of-life set in a small company which makes computer games. Sakura Quest continues it's run as does another series which I enjoyed in the spring but neglected to post on here. I will rectify that by giving it it's own paragraph.

The series is Sakurada Reset. It's probably the most "intelligent" anime since Erased, and the description is a bit complex. It takes place in a small city, perhaps a coupe thousand inhabitants, nestled between the sea and the mountains. the unique feature is that a large portion of the residents have some paranormal or special power. Limiting this is the fact that if anyone leaves the town they lose their power and forget that they ever had it. Got that? The town is managed by a Bureau which oversees and meddles in everything, and being an organization run by people they have all the flaws of your standard hierarchy. They are neither good nor evil...they just are. The lead character is a high school boy whose gift has perfect memory. Pretty useless until he gets teamed with a lonely, sullen girl who has the ability to reset the world up to 48 hours to a saved point. She only uses it when she sees something which makes her ad, but it has no real effect because she gets reset as well and is unaware that she has used her power until she tries to at the same point and can't because she can only reset can only go back to the same save point one or two times depending on how fr back the save was. However, her power does not affect his memory. He has noticed time repeating on several occasions, put it down to someone's ability, taken care to repeat the same actions so as not to change anything each time. That's the background. The plot, loosely, is the two of them teaming up as a "Service Club" taking assignments from the Bureau to help certain people in the town. It's very words, dialogue-driven. It's like reading something written by Isaac Asimov. Also pretty high-brow with a decided lack of explosions, car chases, mechas, blood, and pantsu. No reason any anime fan would ever want to watch this.

Started watching One-Punch Man. Hysterical.

First anime for me, unless you count Speed Racer as anime.

Ha! I used to watch Speed Racer (or rather Mach Go-Go-Go) when I was little.

Welcome to the exciting world of anime. And whatever you do, don't lose your life to this addiction like I have....

For some good ideas, feel free to look back through the thread. There is literally another culture's worth of entertainment waiting for you.

Re: What [anime] are you watching?

We have a ton of short intros in this thread. That's the best place.

Otherwise, what do you like? Comedy, drama, romance, slice of life, sci-fi, fantasy, historicals, vampires, angsty teen dramas,...?
