Is there anything in the books so far that support it?

I have a slightly different take, although i agree that Mattie's conspiracy theory is off the mark.

ASOIAF has suffered from the same thing that happened in Wild Cards. Martin kills off great characters too quickly for shock value, then introduces new characters to fill the void, and he just keeps doing it over and over. He can't help himself, it's part of his genius and it's also his greatest flaw as an author.

The books will not have Sansa kill Ramsay.

The books will not have Brienne kill Stannis.

The books will not burn Shireen alive.

The books will not have the Iron Bank working with Cersei.

The books will not have Doran Martell killed by Elia

The books will not give Jorah greyscale.

The books will not have Asha ("Yara") teaming up with Dany.

The books will not have Baelish and Sansa hanging out at Winterfell.

The books will not kill off Rickon Stark.

...

The books WILL have Cersei blowing up the Sept.

The books WILL have Dany taking over the Dothraki.

The books WILL have Melisandre bringing Jon back to life.

The books WILL have Arya killing Walder Frey.

The books WILL bring back Sandor Clegane.

Sort of. The Children of the Forest were being exterminated ruthlessly. They needed protectors.

It just makes sense in my head. From what Mo said, and we need SOME kind of origin for them, why not the Children.

That really is one of the most absurd things I've seen on the show. Second to Doran Martell's death.

He's so hard-core about sacrifice and duty that I could see him doing that in the books.
It might not happen in the books, but I think that would be because GRRM doesn't pursue the angle more-so than something Stannis wouldn't do. He always seemed to me to put duty above family.

He thinks he is a King, and Shireen is his heir.
That's duty, not family feeling.
If she had an older sibling, yeah, he might burn her. But she doesn't.
