Hey soup, you around???

Got a brain scratcher for ya. Who am I thinking of?

He played for both the Sonics and the Thunder, but was not on the roster at the time the franchise moved.

Hint: He's now retired from playing.

Re: NBA/WNBA Thread

No soup around to answer the question, apparently, so i guess I must spill it.

It's none other than Kevin Ollie. The UConn alum and current head coach had quite the vagrant career in the NBA. Wherever he laced his sneaks was his home, to twist a lyric. He came to Seattle from the Bucks in the Payton/Allen swap as one of the "other guys in the trade", something which happened a few times with him, it seems. Only played the last third of that season, one start in 30 games in green and yellow, before moving on. Okay, bit over a third, less than half, call it two fifths. That was in 2003. From there he went to Cleveland for a year, to Philly for his third stint with the Sixers, to the T-Wolves in the 2008-2009 season and finally he spent his final season season with his 14th NBA team in a 13 year NBA career, OKC.

Re: NBA/WNBA Thread

There was one Oak moment I'll never forget. Jordan's Bulls and New York were in the EC Finals... again. Chicago won the first two at home, and after a travel day, everybody was ready to bury the Knicks if they couldn't win game 3.

Ewing had a very difficult game, doubled up for nearly every minute he played. But Oakley put up some gaudy numbers and he owned the paint for close to 40 minutes. The headline on the Post the next morning told the tale...

OAK STANDS TALL!!!

Yeah, ultimately Chicago won the hardware... again. For me it was still an unforgettable game, and it epitomized the way "the other Charles" played.

Who else is on the Lunch Pail Crew, BigCat?

________

Kristaps out early tonight, doesn't look like anything too serious long-term. Carmelo Anthony and A Few Other Guys beat the Pacers anyway, and looked fairly solid doing it. 3-1 against Indy this year, who are a playoff team. I don't get it. I hope management doesn't give up on this group of guys, though. Carmelo has a contract year coming up.

I checked up on his career stats after my last little rant. Basketball-reference.com had his HOF likelihood at 98.2% if he retired yesterday. He hasn't hurt that since then. He's still young enough to play at least a few more years if he wants, but IMO he needs to learn to be more of a role player. Tonight the Knicks needed him to take over, and it's great that he can still do that, but that hasn't worked in the past as a franchise model, and it's not going to start working at any point left in his career.

Re: NBA/WNBA Thread

Who else? Good question, really. There's not really a list so much as a rough set of criteria. Oak is the archetype, says a lot about the guy considering that I am not a Knicks fan.

Basically, not in their sport's Hall of Fame or seriously considered for induction due solely to career numbers, ie. they didn't compile enough key stats (for instance 2,500 hits over a 15 year career) is the prime requisite. Beyond that, a career spent mostly with one or two teams, a fan favorite, respected by the opponents, liked by teammates, and an obvious work ethic. Anyone with an attitude problem, a case of "me-ism", disdain for the legal system or penchant for domestic abuse is viewed disfavorably but I am willing to account for penance contritely served with behavior modified accordingly.

A couple of names I have stated, John Lynch is one, Mack Strong is another. Always looking for more candidates.

Re: NBA/WNBA Thread

Donnie Baseball. A man so class they even let him push the boundary of the Yanks' uber-strict grooming code. He had the misfortune to play for the team at a time when Steinbrenner had an itchy trigger finger and tendency to be a "helicopter owner". They had success despite all that up until '81, their last World Series appearance for a long time. Mattingly arrived the next season and the team did not make the play-offs until '95, his final season. That allowed him to NOT retire with the dubious club record for most games without a post-season appearance.

I'd say Mattingly makes the list.

Re: NBA/WNBA Thread

My Clippers are now the 5th seed if the playoffs started today.

Maybe, if you can't beat the Bucks, you shouldn't be in the Playoffs.

My Clippers needed no help in defeating the defending world champs, Cleveland Cavaliers. 108-78! For those trying to figure out the margin of victory, that's 30 points.

"King" James, Irving, nor Love had an answer for CP3 and the guys. Where's BA? He'll be hard to find now.
