and don't ya think he has a lion's look?

Do you think the Wizard and the shaman are played by the same actor? The shaman is not pictured here on this advertisement so we can have a good look.

Re: Emerald City - NBC Friday

I was quite wary of watching this but I really enjoyed it.
I liked the clockwork stuff (hope there is more) and I liked the music as well. I am looking forward to the next ep.
It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the original Wizard of Oz, merely borrowing names.

According to the captions, the village Dorothy was first brought was the home of the "Munja-kin." LOL.

Yep. As soon as I saw Tip I was like "That ain't no boy."

I think your right on target there.

Apparently the woman's name is Mombi - she's also known as the Wicked Witch of the North - I assume she survived being stabbed and pummeled by Lucas because "only witches can kill witches".

Tip is apparently the rightful ruler of Oz.
Asking humbly: why the spoiler tags? The woman's name, Mombi, was mentioned in the episode by the guy who sent Dorothy to her. The Witch of the North is the one dressed in white we see at the funeral. I think you are right that Mombi still lives because "only witches can kill witches."
As for Tip, is that your speculation or is it from some other source?

I suppose the other witches will pursue her now because of them. They may bestow some power, I am speculating it will be something like teleportation because: The witch herself caught up to Dorothy rather quickly, and the original ruby slippers could be construed as having the same such power.

I think so: The original scarecrow "had no brain"; Lucas has amnesia.
Also, the episode started with a shot of a scarecrow in a field which had the same form as Lucas as he was strung-up (I do not take him as a Christ-symbol).

You could be right, or he may turn out to be the Tin-Man, a man in armor.

I am loosely speculating that Tip may be the Lion because so far one could say "it has been fear that has kept the Lion away", that is, Mombi the witch's fear.
(Also, Tip has quite a mane )
As lions signify regality, so she may be the hidden Princess/Queen of Oz.
Or maybe the reincarnation of the (destroyed?) Witch of the South. Or both.

Or it may be that Tip is merely this season's plot point.

I didn't hear Mombi's name mentioned in the episode, but I recognized the actress and looked up the role she's playing (Mombi). I ended up looking up Mombi and Tip and getting the info (from the books) so thought it would be safer to spoiler tag.

I forgot how Wizard of Oz books there were (14!), lots of material for the show runners to work with.

Oh, I like the idea of the gloves taking the place of the red slippers from the book.

That was a hella mane she got once the potion wore off. Also, it didn't look like Tip's friend (Jack) was the accepting type.

I could buy into her being the lion too. My lion, the one I proposed earlier in the thread, was definitely no coward.

Re: Emerald City - NBC Friday

I like a lot of the design in this show. As dark as the show tends to be, look at the whimsical architecture in this scene:

Couldn't agree more, J_C!

Plus, the figure frozen in the background, is suppose to come alive in upcoming episodes.

Now that we've seen the third episode, we know that the Wizard brought Karen to Oz and she was called the "Interloper". She arrived in Lucas, Ks, twenty years ago, frightened and obviously running from someone. She identified the infant with her as her daughter. But -- she may not be Dorothy's mother -- she probably is -- but Karen could have stolen Dorothy and brought her to the Kansas dimension to hide her and keep her safe -- not unlike Mombi hiding Tip and keeping her safe.
We know that 20 years ago, when the Wizard came into power, he banned all practice of magic. I can't remember if he sought to eliminate all witches save the cardinal ones, but it stands to reason that he did. I would wager he didn't want anyone to have more power than himself.
I think that Dorothy was born in Oz and may be a witch or a witch's child. Why else the need to hide her?

I think she was fleeing from someone in Oz. Somehow she left Oz with Dorothy to hide her. I don't know that she ran because she herself was in danger -- more than likely, it was Dorothy at risk.

I agree that Tip may represent the lion from the original story and thought that immediately. (Well-laid-out speculation J_C.)

Again, I agree that "Lucas" represents the scarecrow from the original story. Besides J_C reasoning, the scarecrow was also Dorothy's first companion on his quest as is Lucas. And Dorothy "saved the scarecrow's life" by freeing him from his wooden stake where he was being picked apart by crows. Dorothy freed Lucas and saved his life as well.

I should correct that because there is actually more. It does begin with Dorothy being whisked away from Kansas in a tornado and deposited in a fantastic world. There is a little bit more but I won't say what it is.
(and by "original" I mean the 1939 movie)

So therefore we will not find in the end Dorothy waking from a dream? I may rewatch the beginning to get a good look at some of those Kansas faces.

The Beast Forever seems to be a strange concept at this point, intriguing.

Spoiler: The Wizard of Oz
Frank Morgan was the also name of the actor who played the Wizard in the movie.
