FF, I think it's very important to look back at all of the Star Trek captains. First, they were all "human", and I assume, American. At least we know Capt. Kirk was born in Iowa.

We should also look at the F/O, Lt. Saru. He was given an order from the Admiral to find Capt. Lorca before he was broken and gave the Klingons the background on the new propulsion system.

His first chore was to get background on all "great" Star-Fleet captains. Looked at what made them great so he could follow in their footsteps. Decisiveness! Courage! was what he tried to model himself.

But can you see Kirk or Picard or Janeway making the choice he did? I'm mainly referring to the choice made after they entered the system to find Lorca. Where the creature was balled up and close to death.

I get that Trek has always been careful about not putting characters in true kobiashi maru scenarios. And they also avoided the truly difficult decisions made during war.

I definitely feel like the show is using the Trek name but not being faithful to the past shows. I'm saying that as someone who got sick of the old formula before TNG even ended.

Not at all!

But again, Lt. Saru isn't human.

I've always looked at the Star Trek enterprise as propaganda for the rest of the world. Remember again, all of the series were probably shipped to every country on the map, including those we consider less than friendly.

TPTB would've never showed a person from a Western Power being anything other than above board. Involvement with a sentient being (someone from one of those less than friendly countries) would've showed just how honorable and forthright people from the west are. JMO!

Re: Star Trek: Discovery - CBS/All Access Sunday

Another excellent episode.

I'm sure I've over emphasized my love of this series, but this episode took it over the top.

The search for Sarek was something to behold. Not necessarily the search, but what it took for him to allow Michael to rescue him.

Learning Sarek chose Spock for the Vulcan Expedition Service instead of Michael made perfect sense to me.

I don't think Capt. Lorca knew of the Klingon treachery, but he's glad for it. If ordered, will he put up a real fight to get the Admiral back?

With the addition of Ash to the crew, Michael now has a love-interest. Curious whether Sylvia will also acquire a crush? If so, will that complicate Michael and Sylvia's relationship?

I'm beginning to like Lt. Stamets a lot more. He was immediately on board with the idea of the artificial Vulcan-mind-meld.

I honestly never understood how a human could be romantically involved with a Vulcan.

Michael seems to be reaching for her human side now though which is good.

Re: Star Trek: Discovery - CBS/All Access Sunday

Pretty good episode. I do have a question though - how far out was that nebula from 'regular' space? I can see how the Discovery can do its spore-warp thing to get there, does the Admiral's shuttlecraft have the same capability? Or why was she already so far out? She got to discovery pretty quickly.

So in acknowledging her human side, is Michaal just going to forget all her Vulcan upbringing? Or are we looking at the constant human/vulcan struggle, a la Spock TOS. (I do like seeing the softer Michael, I will admit. Much less abrasive, far more sympathetic.)

Who remembers the Admiral from Chicago Hope??? I do!!!!

Remember, she was already out there for the meeting with dissident Klingon faction.

She just stopped by the Discovery to say hello to Capt. Lorca. Should've known they had a romantic background.

I also remember when Lorca's quarters were rung, he answered the door with a phaser in his pants.

Because he assumed she was back from her mission, was he planning on killing her to keep Discovery?

I think it's a struggle she'll continue to have throughout the series. Personally, I enjoy the conflict, especially in this episode.
