Re: The Alienist on TNT

I agree with you, DSOtM, that the subject matter is most foul, but the period depictions is wonderful, and the story is fascinating. I just look away at certain times.

Caleb Carr, the author is actually a historian. He was worried about being accepted into the non-fiction genre at the time of writing this novel. However he has written 2 more with the same premise of time and people as this one. Then he's written other fictions as well, all with the same atttention to historical detail. Caleb claims a huge amount of research went into the first book just to keep the "cutting edge" forensics proper for the time of 1896.

Hildebrandt's Starling

Just adding detail to the story. My questions are
Why did the see the Jessi prisoner? Apparently Jessi knew at least Lazlo from his earlier encarceration. He did seem quite normal in a sense with intelligence and speech after being locked up for 22 years

Lazlo has a lot of anger issues himself and they seem to be focused on his mother. Has there been any other mention of this?

I am very creeped out by those Van Brunen people. Was the crazy boy we saw in the previous episode on of her sons as well? He seemed to be focused on animals though.

Re: The Alienist on TNT

This show is so deceptive! On the surface it seems really slow, and then all of a sudden I realize the hour is over and I was so engrossed I didn't realize.

It's also deceptively disturbing. Like, Hannibal level disturbing. Not as overt, but

The acting is great, I guess Dakota Fanning is the rare child star who remains a pro as an adult. Interested to see how this finishes up!

I thought his one arm was nonfunctional yet we see him use it to shake hands from time to time. Why can he use it then but usually it hangs at his side?
