Unfortunately Wildfire is very volatile and even sunlight will set it off. According to the Wiki, it should only be moved at night and transported in sand filled carts to minimize jostling. I think if they wait until full winter sets in they can keep it cool enough to do its work on cue. I wouldn't want to be the cart driver or anywhere near the stuff, lol.

I really had forgotten about wildfire. But I bet Tyrion hasn't. It will come in handy when he and his friend Jon Snow get back together and have to save the realm's behind. But maybe the wildfire goes into league with the White Walkers (fire with ice, not one against the other).

Re: A Clash of Kings: Mo's ASOIAF First Read Thread

Three and a half years later, this thread just made a wonderful re-read.

It is absolutely ASTOUNDING how much we were collectively and individually right about.

I'd love to go through it all, but y'all can do that yourselves if you're so interested.

There is ONE post that i need to take issue with, though.

The Dothraki will always be disadvantaged against a Westerosi force-- they are fierce, yes, but a good complement of archers would cut them down.

It wasn't cavalry that ended the age of armored knights-- it was gunpowder. At one point warfare was infantry, then armored knights in Europe and mounted Turks in the middle east changed the power to cavalry, but gunpowder made those horse-mounted warriors obsolete. A gun will rip apart an armored knight, but arrows and arakhs, not so much.
You are only partially correct. Broadheaded arrows that could punch through steel armor date back at least as far as Agincourt. Gunpowder had been on battlefields for centuries before knights stopped being the tanks of the battlefields, and the cannons for which gunpowder was originally used caused nearly as many "friendly" casualties as enemy, although they were great at blowing up defensive bulwarks. Cavalry were major forces in many battles up to and including World War I, and some countries were still using them to reasonable effect in WWII. TANKS replaced knights, not guns. Guns were unreliable weapons until the 20th century and a well-trained company of archers would annihilate a line of musketeers right up to the era of the US civil war.

The major military technological advance that made Mongol conquest was the stirrup, which gave riders far greater control and maneuverability. Your boy and mine, Napoleon Bonaparte, largely made his military name through inventive use of light cavalry for flanking maneuvers.
