Middle of August nobody thought the team would be in the play-offs.

It's 8 PM Eastern, 5 PM Pacific on Saturday on FOX in the US and TSN in Canada.

And it's official. Sounders are the 2016 MLS Champions. Toronto 0 - 0 Seattle aet, 4 -5 on penalty kicks.

Sounders now have an MLS Cup to add to the trophy case along with a Supporter's Shield, four Lamar Hunt U S Open Cup trophies and four trophies from combined league titles in the A-League and USL in the pre-MLS era. Dem's my lads.

Re: The Official Soccer (Or Call It Football If You Really Have To) Thread

MLS is back!

Two new teams, Atlanta United and Minnesota United. The former are part owned by Falcons owner Arthur Blank and wear a sporty red-and-black striped kit in keeping with the general theme of the city's sports and reminiscent of AC Milan's. They spent money for a good coach and filled out the maximum of DPs. The latter took the name "The Loons" after the state bird, although I refer to them as "Min U", wear a hideous grey kit with a light blue sash sinister (that is angled downwards left to right), about the best thing I can think to say about it is that it won't be confused with any other teams if, on the off chance there are ever highlights shown. They seem to have barely taken the effort to assemble a squad.

Atlanta lost their first match, a home test v Red Bull, in a thrilling 1 - 2 result. Minnesota barely showed up in Portland, the retooled Timbers putting in five against a single lucky goal for the newbies.

Is it too early to predict a league record for futility for Min U followed by a quick relocation a few hundred miles down river to St Louis?

My lads opened up their title defense in Houston and looked like a college team for the first half. Errant passes, shoddy defensive cover, it led to a 2 - 0 halftime deficit, both goals coming from gifted possession in their own end. A brilliant free kick goal by Erick Cubo Torres curled around the end of the wall beat an unsighted Stephen Frei for Dynamo's first, Romell Quioto's top corner shot from 24 yards, defended by a backpedaling Roman Torres gave Frei no chance, the Dynamo got their second with three minutes left in the half.

Brian Schmetzer calmed his squad at the intermission, fixed a few formation bits, they actually started playing like the defending champs again. Unfortunately all they could muster was a goal from Clint Dempsey approaching the hour mark, he pounced on a sitter in the box following a cross off the left wing from Joevin Jones and buried it no mistakes. Final score Dynamo 2 - 1 Sounders.

Next weekend it's up to Montreal for the Rave Green. Starting the season with two away games. How thrilling. All a team can do is play them out.

Re: The Official Soccer (Or Call It Football If You Really Have To) Thread

Here we have "What is wrong with MLS" in a nutshell.

Watch the video. The game is from last weekend, FC Dallas at Los Angeles Galaxy, it shows German-born US International MF Jermaine Jones of Galaxy making a late tackle from behind on Cristian Colman of FC Dallas.

http://www.mlssoccer.com/mls-discipl...?autoplay=true

The nature of the foul, the situation, the timing, in any league in the world that tackle will earn a red card and at least a two-match ban for dangerous play. Jones was only issued a yellow card on the field and the League Disciplinary Committee, after review, handed down a single match ban and an undisclosed fine.

The comments section below the video will say more than I can about what fans think.

Hold the phone, footie fans. John Hackworth, coach of the US U-17 Mens team has named his roster for the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup in India and one name will jump out at any follower of the beautiful game. Tim Weah. Yuppers, he is the son of Liberian legend George Weah, the 1995 Ballon d'Or winner and later President of the nation. He recently signed a contract with PSG. It will be interesting to watch his development and see whether he can be persuaded to play for the full US MNT at some point in the future.

Okay. So the "unthinkable" has happened. At least it is considered unthinkable now. The US has failed to qualify for the World Cup Final Tournament in Russia next summer. Let the recriminations begin.

This video, which was podcast on ESPN FC dot com just after the US lost in Trinidad and Tobago, shows former Trinidadian International GK Shaka Hislop joining former US International Herculez Gomez and Max Bretos on their show discussing ways the USSF can move forward from here. I think they make valid points.

TBC, I heard a former player (can't remember his name) on ESPN go off on the Federation, along with every coach and player on the U.S. team.

Probably Alexi Lalas. He's an idiot. To his mind, and a lot of other peoples' to boot, there would not be a problem if the US had made the World Cup. Rot. The problems would still be there, They are only an issue in everyone's faces because the US failed to qualify. Arena has been fired, the older guys like Dempsey and a few others over 30 have probably played their last for the National Team, Lalas will be happy until we fail to make the field in Qatar. Which is not such a bad deal because who really wants to go to a soccer tourney in Qatar? Anyway, it's not the end of the world. The Dutch aren't going and the Swedes and Italians are playing to see which of those two misses out as well, meanwhile the Lost Vikings a.k.a the Icelanders are in.

How did this come about? Blame the group selection in UEFA. Somehow France, Sweden and The Netherlands all ended up in the same group and finished in that order while Iceland was grouped with Hrivatka, Ukraine, Turkey, Finland, and Kosovo. The Azzuri finished second to Spain.

If you want a breakdown on the problems as I see them I will oblige, otherwise I won't bore you.
