The Voice

So, I happened to catch the first episode of this show after The Biggest Loser last night (9pm, on NBC), and I thought it was pretty interesting. Fans of American Idol would probably like it. The premise is this:

4 singing stars (Cee-Lo Green, Christina Aguilara, Adam Lavine, and a country singer that I don't know) each have to pick 8 singers to be on their team from a pool of contestants that have gone through a series of preliminary auditions. They then will coach and evaluate their teams and widdle them down to 4 each and then compete against each other where America will decide the winners and there is a record contract involved.

What's kind of interesting is the way they choose their teams; by a blind audition. They each have their chairs turned so that they can not see the person singing. Therefore the attractiveness, performance style, or overall look doesn't come into play, just their voice. So, if the star likes what they hear and want the singer on their team, they press a button and their chair turns around to face the singer. If only one of them turns around, then that singer is on their team. If more than one turns around, then the singer gets to choose who's team they want to be on. If nobody turns around, the singer goes home and does not continue.

The stars get a bit competitive in trying to lure the singers to their team, and there's some funny banter that goes on between them. I was pretty entertained. None of the singers totally blew me away, but almost all of them were very good and it will be cool to see how some of them progress after some coaching.

Did anyone else watch this show? What did you think?

Re: The Voice

I lurved some of the performances.

The judge Liz didn't know is Blake Shelton..

I missed the first 20 minutes, but out of the ones I saw....

On Christina's team now... I loved the rock performance given by the bald lesbian..
Beverly...

On Cee-lo's team.... loved Kelsey...

also liked Tje or whatever his name his..

On Adam's team.. Loved Jeff...

and triple loved the folk singer Rebecca... loved a lot..

From Blake's team.. lloved the only one he got that I actually saw perform...

The other ones chosen might have been equally good, and even the
ones I saw that were not chosen were not bad.

Looking forward to it.

Re: The Voice

You missed some great, really strong voices in the beginning, including:

Tarralyn Ramsey

and Frenchie Davis, who also was on American Idol in one of the early seasons (You might remember her, I did), but got kicked off because off something she did beforehand, nude modeling or something like that.

They are both on Christina's team, which I think is a great match for both of them.

Re: The Voice

Didn't care much for Beverly's Joplin cover.
To be fair, Janis is a hard act to follow.
I'll agree that the artist's banter is pretty funny.
I'm kinda more worried bout when we get to the public voting.
IMHO - they'd be better off with just judges.

Oh yes... I indeed do remember Frenchie from Idol.

If my memory serves me properly, she was kicked off because it came to
light that she had done some..er.. modeling work for a website devoted to
those who like plus sized gals. If I'm not mistaken, I recall that it was
actually pretty tame stuff relatively speaking. I remember she had a very
strong voice, and I'm pretty sure I liked her.

Vince... I'm pretty good about being able to not compare someone to the
original performer, especially if it's 40 years old. I thought Beverly sang the
song with true passion, and with a surprisingly good voice.

Re: The Voice

Javiar was by far the best of the group so far IMO. They all can sing, so for me it goes to being creative. He did just that with his performance...

Re: The Voice

Watched some of it, and liked the idea for the auditions.
It levels the playing field for less attractive people, as well as attractive. I just don't see where it goes after the auditions. Do we get to watch them get coached up? Will it be an American Idol competition where America gets to vote? I mean, after the teams are made, what are they going to show?
I'm not a fan of Idol, and not much of a fan of this. My chickie likes it, so I'll be watching whether I like it or not, but not much of a fan right now...
