Re: The Orville - Fox Sunday

Yeah, I think I'm giving up on this. The second epi was much better, so I thought maybe it was just taking some time to warm up. But that episode was not funny, vaguely preachy, and not nearly as warm-feeling-ey as it should have been. Actually rolled my eyes several times. It's like they are regurgitating shows that have already been made while unsuccessfully trying to make them funny

Too bad, I really like what's her name (Bobbi from MAOS) in this and wish the Shield spinoff had been picked up.

Yeah Iíve pulled the plug on this. I had reservations to begin with but decided to give it a chance anyway. I only have so much room in my TV schedule to begin with, and this was going to have to offer some biting humor, and this hasnít come close to cutting it in that regard. It could have gone a couple of other ways, but Itís not endearing like Firefly, and takes itself too serious to be campy.

Iíve lost what limited interest I had.

I'm not sure I'll watch this series, but it sounds like he's simply trying to make the Trek show he wasn't allowed to make. At least for the most part. I'm sure he's making it more quirky than he would if he was given the chance to make Trek.

Re: The Orville - Fox Sunday

What I find bizarre is the timing. To me it looks like he's trying to directly compete with ST Discovery. CBS/Paramount owns the rights to the Star Trek franchise and they've recently sued a fan film for trying to profit from their IP. I think they've tweaked Orville enough that maybe they can avoid a law suit, but not by much. The "inspiration" is clearly there.

There is definitely some inspiration going on. I was inspired to change my
DVR settings so this would no longer record.

The Orville is no more infringing than Galaxy Quest was. Meaning they are both parodies and protected.

The fan film used Trek uniforms, insignias, characters and locations among other things. They also used Star Trek in their name.

The people that collected millions for the fan film basically ruined it for all of the other fan content creators. The project was huge and was designed to make them money. They got the attention of paramount and now other fan projects suffer as well. some are shutting down due to the time limits and not being able to carry stories over(otherwise fan creators could just release full films in small chunks.)

Yeah... I'm not paying another dime for TV content, and The Orville is ill-conceived.

Such is life.
