____

I'm back to Mithgar, reading The Darkest Day by Dennis L. McKiernan. It's the third book in the Dark Tower trilogy.

Re: What are you reading?

Crassi pls, and also Mo have you gotten to Honeysuckle & Pain yet?

And, to fit in with the thread, I finally restarted Foucault' s Pendulum after gangbanging Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon, N-W by Zadie Smith, and Doctor Sleep by Stephen King in so many days.

What a loss it was for cancer to take Umberto Eco. The Name of The Rose was one of the best books I've ever read. I have a feeling this one, And The Prague Cemetery will carry the torch.

Re: What are you reading?

There are three book series I quit reading due to the second books: The Ender series, Hitchhikers guide and the Dune series. In all three series the first books were among my favorites of all time and their followups just weren't intriguing to me. Kind of like the Matrix films I guess.

I feel like all of those series probably deserve a revisit by me though. And I don't remember if I finished the book after the truly exceptional Hyperion.

Mr Mo-- I have been trapped in Disc World for almost a year! I read something heavy and then take a Pratchet break. Thank you for the recommendation, I have loved all the books. I can't decide if I like the witches or Death stories best.
How did i miss this post? Ready Player One is a book that i've seen recommended by a ton of people whose opinions i value, but i've still never read it. I don't think i've ever even seen it anywhere.

I'm thrilled that you love Discworld. I like the Lancre Coven stories best overall myself, though Mort was favorite early book and some of the later Sam Vimes books are right up there too. He did a very fun spinoff Young Adult series based in Discworld too. I think i found Discworld's origin story in one of his first published novels, too. Now that there will sadly be no more of his novels being written, i spent a while checking out some of his other stuff. One standout was a collaboration with Stephen Baxter called The Long Earth. It was very different but i enjoyed it a lot. There are four more books in that series that i also hope to some day devour. So much left to read in this world and it often seems like the lists only get longer, but it's a labour of love.

I think it's worth noting that Pratchett also once collaborated with Neil Gaiman on a book called Good Omens, which i think neatly captures the best of both authors, who are each among my favorites, and Warthawg1 is close to finishing what is probably the most epic First Read thread Of All Time based on Gaiman's Magnum Opus, Sandman (or at least i like to think of it as his magnum opus).

________

Frodo -

I was fortunate enough to have a really great English teacher the year i read Canterbury Tales, so even though i found actually reading them to be a bit laborious, i was given an understanding and deep appreciation for what he'd accomplished. That definitely leant a lot to my enjoyment of Hyperion in spite of the fact that i felt that the structural homage to Chaucer made it a more challenging read than i felt it needed to be; by the time i was getting to the last couple tales i was forgetting parts of the early ones, just because they were so detached. Anyway, it was a really cool concept and probably as well-executed as something like that could have been done.

But. If the characters and 'verse of Hyperion interested you anywhere near as much as the nimbly adept Chaucer homage did, i gotta say the books just keep getting better. If Hyperion gets 8.5/10, i'd give Fall of Hyperion an 8.8/10, Endymion a 9.1, and Rise of Endymion a 9.5. Just my opinions for what they're worth. The way it all comes together in the fourth book was really something special for me, but i'm sure not everybody would agree.
