Well, the Eagles were biatched slapped throughout that game. 24-10!

While I'm on the subject, I picked the Eagles last night, but I'm still glad the Seahawks won the game. Oh TBC!

You know BA, I watched that Vikings vs. Falcons game, and IMO, the Vikings are the best team in the League. They've got a great Defense and a very good Offense. As a matter of fact, they rank in the top 5 in both categories.

What I don't understand are the Chiefs. They get off to a 5-0 start, and loose the next 5-6. WTF!

After the Saints win again. I'm totally on board. Oh Mr Mo!

Re: NFL Thread Pt. II

That Saints win over Carolina was a big'un, but the deal STILL ain't sealed. Two games left against divisional rival and defending conference champion Atlanta Falcons in the next three weeks. The game in between they get to host the Jets, which should be a gimme, but in this league you just never know. They should get good odds at the Bucs to close out the season too.

BUT if Atlanta wins out they'll win the division regardless of how the Saints do with the other two games. We just need to beat them ONCE Hodge. Atantla has the Bucs and Panthers, so we can't count on any help. The Saints need to finish the regular season strong or they'll start the postseason either on the road or on vacation.

I actually see a thin chance for a first-round bye for the Saints, but they'll DEFINITELY need help for that as well as winning out, which is highly unlikely considering those two Falcons games.

It's cute the way fans try to figure out if their team has a chance to lose to the Pats.

Oh look who sidles into the thread dragging Gronk.

Soup, what a cheap shot he gave that Bill's CB. Just because he intercepted one of Brady's wounded ducks.

And, Gronk only gets a 1-game suspension. Who has Kraft bought off now?

Re: NFL Thread Pt. II

It's cute the way some fans stop sweating when the Giants are out of the playoffs, you'd think they hadn't ever lost to the Steelers or Ravens or the Bills, for that matter. Or like the NFL has gimme games. You'd think a ten-year drought might have taught some humility. Maybe they need a horrific locker room incident to top off a decade of utter futiliity.

Funny how sometimes it seems like Yankees fans are the only ones who truly have long memories.

Re: NFL Thread Pt. II

Okay...here's one for the books. Neil deGrasse Tyson weighs in on a football play. Why not, right? He opines on everything else and as Heinlein remarked, one of the fallacies of our modern era is the belief that expertise in one area automatically equates to expertise in a wide variety of others. Well, in this case he was invited.

Sunday night's game, which probably most of you missed because I know how much everyone hates listening to Collinsworth. On a third an 9 just short of midfield Wilson scrambled up the middle and right before he ran into a roadblock of Eagles he flipped the ball to Mike Davis who was about five yards to his right and a couple of steps behind him. Davis continued downfield for 17 yard and a first down, the Seahawks later scored a TD on the drive. In real time it looked like a legit lateral. However, when the SNF crew slowed it down and showed it from a sideline camer it was clear that Davis caught the ball about a yard further forward from where Wilson had tossed it. Since Wilson was beyond the line, illegal forward pass. However, Doug Pederson never threw the red flag, even though his people had about 20 seconds to look at the same footage that the SNF crew were showing the folks at home.

The whole thing was an illusion. Wilson was traveling forward, Davis was traveling forward, so the ball, which was also traveling forward in absolute terms, looked like it was not traveling forward because Wilson and Davis were moving forward at a greater velocity. Pete Carroll put this in the form of a classic physics term know as a "Galilean Transformation" and messaged Tyson for conformation.

As per ESPN's Brady Henderson:
A day after Pete Carroll reached out to Neil deGrasse Tyson for his expert explanation of what happened on Russell Wilson's lateral to Mike Davis, the famed astrophysicist responded on Twitter. He called it "a legit Galilean Transformation." Here's Encyclopedia Britannica's definition: "Galilean transformations, also called Newtonian transformations, set of equations in classical physics that relate the space and time coordinates of two systems moving at a constant velocity relative to each other. Adequate to describe phenomena at speeds much smaller than the speed of light, Galilean transformations formally express the ideas that space and time are absolute; that length, time, and mass are independent of the relative motion of the observer; and that the speed of light depends upon the relative motion of the observer."

Re: NFL Thread Pt. II

Kudos to Carroll.

Also always nice to see an astrophysicist admit that the speed of light isn't constant, even if he didn't mention wavelength variations.

Ah...but the speed of light IS constant. Individual photons can be slowed, that's a different matter. What "dependent upon the observer" means is that the speed of light is constant for every observer regardless of their location or motion rather than constant to the emitting source or some fixed reference in space-time.

Re: NFL Thread Pt. II

But speed itself is a relative concept, or so i've been thinking all these years. Right before a 96 mph fastball meets the sweet spot on the barrel of a bat moving at a considerable velocity itself, at what speed were they moving toward each other?

To go a bit more macro with the concept, and bring it back to, specifically, the speed of light, here's another example. The big cold spot in the universal map that can be spotted in the background microwave radiation - when light is moving into and toward the center of that cold spot, is loses energy, technically slowing a bit. Interestingly enough, it recovers most of that energy on the way back out, but not ALL. So light that has travelled through it is in fact moving infinitesmally slower than light that hasn't. But that's just one good macro example. Black Holes are phenomena whose gravity is so dense, that not even light can escape. One can argue that when it can no longer move fast enough to escape, it ceases to be light, but it's just as easy if not easier to argue that that the particles are being pulled in as part of a process, not an event. Black holes create another problem in the idea that the speed of light is constant, in that relativistic time dilation shows that time itself is relative, and how can the speed of anything be constant when speed is a factor of time, and time itself is relative?
