The main reason I don't really believe this theory, at least with regards to the show is that there's been no foreshadowing of the island. I think it was only mentioned once.

But if that was their destination the story could go in several directions. I'd probably want to kill off the children if I were them.
Personally I would say "nuts" to that theory.

This comment seems to have been pulled out of the reddit users behind:

“The writers have dropped hints about the Gods Eye for years and have always discussed the Riverlands with great detail.”

Uh... no

Then there is this piece of rectum based supportive evidence:

"“Eastwatch by the Sea [the location the Night King destroyed during the finale] is the closest part of the wall to the Gods Eye."

Uh...

His arguments are certainly poor. As you state they certainly haven't been hinting at it. They probably mentioned the isle in the first season and not at all since then. they've recently brought up the children again, in the cave. But that has nothing to do with the isle.

Looking at the map, there really isn't a huge difference in terms of distance from the wall to the isle. but castle black probably would have been a shorter route and the Shadow tower would have been even shorter given the landmasses.

I always found the isle fascinating in the books, but the show has clearly ignored it.

My season 8 theory: quality of writing will continue to deteriorate in lockstep with my interest in watching.

At least several people with plot armor will die in the final season. But beyond that, it will just be an action packed cliff notes version of the story. I think it's actually pretty hard to get worse than Season 7 though.

Re: Season 8 theory thread

I'm still trying to figure out what George plans to do with the WW's and their motivations. Maybe they have prophecies of their own and started moving south again after a specific moment occurred. I don't see George simply using them as a force of evil but who knows.

What if they simply want their humanity back and know they have to fight to reach the Isle of Faces? They hit wildling populations, including hardhome, to significantly increase their army and then move south.

The show gives possible hints that he knew Dany would come. But things in the books may not occur like that at all. maybe they will make a push for the horn or maybe once they touched Bran and he went south, they were now able to go south.

Another possibility is that the WW's made a deal all those years ago just before the wall went up. Then something happened that broke the deal.

The show's WWs are definitely not consistent with their descriptions in the book. The show has also chosen to ignore the story of the Night's King, his WW wife or the Nightfort. The show has pretty much ignored the epic mystery of the Isle of Faces.

I'm still holding out hope that the war with the WW's will not be won by force of arms. Either they will discover what the WW's want and let them have it or Jon and company will make some sort of deal/sacrifice. Those seem to be more likely as an endgame George would write.

When George discusses a bittersweet ending, it makes me wonder if he means like LOTR in that all magic will have to leave the world and many of our favorite characters no longer will fit in.

I'm not sure where this should go, so I'm putting it here since if it will happen on the show it will be during Season 8

I think he presents a strong case as there seems to be plenty of foreshadowing. But man I'd hate to see that happen.

Re: Season 8 theory thread

He does present a strong case. The weakest link is Varys/Illyrio; they're well-aware of Tyrion's literacy.

One less obvious weak point is that GRRM has favorite characters, and those characters never lose things that can't be replaced or which don't eventually become addition by subtraction. Cases in point: Jon Snow loses his life, it's replaced; Dany loses Drogo and their son, but gains three dragons. I could produce a dozen similar plot devices from Wild Cards, but i'll spare us all.

Tyrion has lost quite a bit already, but nothing so dramatic, and the analogy of Jamie's sword hand and Tyrion's tongue is a strong one, and one that could even work in the framework, as Tyrion's writings could become a far greater influence and even legacy than his tongue could ever produce.

Tyrion, as one of GRRM's favorites, is also unlikely to lose something that's been done before. Many tongues have been lost. Clearly Trion also loves his penis, and presumably feels quite attached to his hands, but those have already been done before.

What could Tyrion lose that would really make him question his own identity? His last name, and everything it implies.

I'll have to reread the books, but I believe Tyrion is nothing without his wit and sharp tongue. I believe it would make him suicidal and an even worse drunk.

Tyrion could still be very formidable without his name.

If this happens I believe it would be only in the books. There is little to no point in doing so at the end of the story.

Re: Season 8 theory thread

Depriving Tyrion of his tongue wouldn't deprive him of his wit, i think.

We've seen him survive and even elevate himself without the privilege and prestige of his royal name, but his name, i think, certainly helped him a lot to gain his position with Dany and her retinue, which is what's truly let him feel back in the saddle so to speak. Certainly his wit played an equal or possibly greater role, but i'm not convinced that Tyrion's wit would be diminished by the loss of his tongue. He's a highly literate person, after all, so maybe the extra time involved in the process of writing something as opposed to saying something might make that something even wittier.

Not to say there might not be a point there, nor that the writers wouldn't go there. Maybe i'm just trying to make discussion for its own sake to some extent, but it's conversation that at least i find interesting - hopefully i'm not the only one.
