Netflix Expresses Interest in Picking Up Canceled 'Terra Nova'
The dinosaur drama aired for one season on Fox
7:51 PM PST 3/7/2012 by THR Staff

Just two days after Fox lowered the axe on Terra Nova, studio 20th Television is scrambling to find a new home for the dinosaur drama. At least one potential buyer apparently likes the idea of continuing the series.

Streaming service Netflix has expressed interest in reviving the time-traveling show from executive producer Steven Spielberg, a source confirms to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fox late Monday opted not to move forward with the pricey Australia-shot drama -- whose two-hour premiere was pegged at a price tag between $10 million and $20 million. Noting the Jason O'Mara-Stephen Lang starrer's international appeal, studio 20th Television announced it would shop the big-budget series to other networks.

While discussions are merely preliminary, the move could make sense for Netflix as it continues its push into original scripted programming with fare including 20th Television's Arrested Development, which the company resurrected in November.

Then again, Netflix's name tends to surface any time a bubble series is canceled, as the streaming service is increasingly seen as a potential savior for shows whose ratings don't justify traditional television network airtime.

While Terra Nova averaged 7.5 million total viewers and 2.6 million in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demo in its 11-episode first season, it failed to catch on the way the network had hoped. Its two-hour finale matched a series low in the demo, drawing a 2.1 rating among adults 18-49 and an audience of 7.2 million.

Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly told reporters in January at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour that the network was waiting to make big decisions as the fate of the Spielberg series until they had a better sense for midseason and development projects. "I do feel fortunate that we have some high-class problems," he said at the time. "[Terra Nova] was an exciting bet to take and it's proven that it was worthwhile."

Meanwhile, 20th Television still holds an option on cast members including Lang and O'Mara. Co-star Christine Adams, meanwhile, has already found her next potential gig, joining ABC's fashion drama pilot Americana.

This is why I watch shows like Survivor and American Idol...

It doesn't matter if it's cancelled. You're not left hanging.

Re: Terra Nova ON FOX

Gotta love the line about "keeping the actors preserved in the amber of their contracts"

From theavclub.com

Somehow not encouraged by analogies likening it to an expensive misfire in need of constant costly repair and ultimately of interest to only a select group of nerds, Netflix has officially passed on picking up Terra Nova, ending two weeks of negotiations and suppressed “extinction” jokes. Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox TV has yet to officially give up on the dinosaurs-and-daddy-issues drama, keeping the actors preserved in the amber of their contracts while continuing to search for a means to revive it and save Terra Nova from inevitable fossilization, with this sentence officially boasting more dinosaur-related things than the actual show. But with three of its stars already signed on to new pilots, plus the necessity of maintaining all those expensive sets and giant wooden dinosaur-blocking fences, that seems unlikely. You can probably go ahead and make those “extinction” jokes now.

Re: Terra Nova ON FOX

I was following that Netflix story. They were also considering The River. I haven't read about the decision yet on The River.

Re: Terra Nova ON FOX

I was so pissed when they canceled Terra Nova. I was really looking forward to the next episode each week...... They should have never gone to fox with this. They really just care about is cop shows and reality tv.
All my LOST friends said they were so pumped for this series because it reminded them of the show.

Terra Nova Star Jason O’Mara Admits The Show Had Problems

Last year, Fox debuted Terra Nova, a TV drama produced by Steven Spielberg. It took place in a dystopian future where the Earth was dying. To survive the decay of civilization the government sent its citizens back in time to a prehistoric era when dinosaurs ruled the world. Once there, they had to re-build society and learn how to survive in this new world. It sounds awesome, right? Well, you’re wrong.

Terra Nova was a flop. It was the biggest and most expensive TV show of all-time. It premiered to a large audience but as time went on, their number and quality dwindled. It was eventually canceled as the show was just finding its identity.

The star of Terra Nova, Jason O’Mara, while doing press for his new show on CBS, Vegas, talked about what went wrong with the dinosaur show. The series had a strong international following but failed to live up to expectations in the States. But when a TV series becomes the most expensive TV series ever made, then a series has a responsibility to be profitable. O’Mara complains,

We were just finding our feet and I think we just proved that by the season finale,” he said. “There was a lot more story to tell and I think there was an audience to watch it, certainly internationally, the show went down extremely well, huge numbers. Just domestically I couldn’t quite get there.

Re: Terra Nova ON FOX

I didn't realise this was the most expensive tv show ever made.

Sad that it was cancelled, I guess we'll never know where the story was going with the series finale cliffhanger...

The show I was most gutted about being cancelled was Flashforward. Awesome premise and a must see show.

Me either. I actually have a hard time believing it was that expensive.
