I had hoped that it involved evolution and time-travel, but nope. The answer to said question was, "Because it was a statue of Tawaret, built by some previous inhabitants."
Yeah, that's an answer....

Re: Did LOST explain the four-toed statue?

What it was doing there was providing a home for Jacob. And since finding Jacob and bringing in Ben to where he was as a loophole to the rules needed to kill Jacob was essential to the main overall story of the series, that's why the statue was important. And that much of the statue story was explained.

Re: Did LOST explain the four-toed statue?

Yes, every answer leads to more questions. In this case, "What previous inhabitants?" and "Why/how did they built such an enormous statue of Tawaret?"

They answered why it had four toes and answered what it had been before its destruction, and they explained (rather weakly imo) how it was destroyed.

We even got to see the inside of it.

gift cards make great gifts both for shoppers who are lazy and/or have a lot of gifts to buy. They're also a shrewd choice if there are individuals in your life for whom it is difficult to shop. When bought through the astore, they also help support this site, which isn't self-sufficient and doesn't hold fund-raisers or any of that other crap.

Please consider doing at least some of your holiday shopping through our astore this year.

I think we should look at what kind of answer audiences expected to see, and I think the answer that most people were looking for, is how and why that statue came to be there.

Re: Did LOST explain the four-toed statue?

Why was it there if there was no explanation for it? The losties could have just encountered another boatwreck. Or what if it had been a crashed UFO? Would it be satisfactory to not be told SOMETHING about the history of it?

And I think the answer the audience should have expected to see should have something to do with the questions as they are presented on the show rather than some infinite regression that has no logical endpoint.

Yes. Sayid raised two questions aloud when the statue remains were first revealed:
SAYID: I don't know what is more disquieting—the fact that the rest of the statue is missing, or that it has four toes.
We learned both how the statue was destroyed (it was struck by the Black Rock riding a tidal wave) as well as why it had only four toes (it was a statue of Tawaret).

That people then decided they needed to know who built the statue and WHY (um, it's a statue), well...
MOTHER: Every question I answer will simply lead to another question.
Who built it? I think we can reasonably assume it was constructed by Egyptians from the other Egyptian objects and buildings around the Island (the loom, sennet game, Temple, etc.).

Why was it built? Who knows. It's a statue. People build statues for all sorts of reasons, and build statues of gods sometimes for no practical reason whatsoever.

The mystery, as presented, was how it was destroyed and why it had four toes. Requiring further explanation for it is something projected by the fans onto the show.

"Yeah, but where do the midichlorians come from, hm?!"

Re: Did LOST explain the four-toed statue?

I think it was really more important to find out how it was destroyed. It was used as a plot device to tie up the black rock and the "wtf has four toes" in a package. The could have created a whole other season focusing on people farther back and I'm sure many wish they has. Something tells me, that statue was around long before, Momma was there.
