As you can see in the posts above, Bob Sacamano believes it's not intellectually justifiable to quote from or cite a book you do not own when making an argument.

We can all agree that you shouldn't cite a source you have not read, but own? In my opinion, this stands in stark contrast to everything I've ever learned about libraries, research, and analytical writing.

What do you all think? Is Bob correct? Must you purchase a book to earn the right to quote from it?

I would amend it to "you can only quote from a book you have read".

I don't see anything wrong with quoting books. It's a compliment to be quoted on just about anything. See my sig.

this whole thread should be closed. "sin" is spiritual and religious. At least, I think I read that somewhere. I don't own the book, so I can't quote it for sure.
