Donate your books...to prisons.

If you have ever watched The Shawshank Redemption, then you know the power of reading and libraries. (If you haven't, do watch it)

Anyway.

The US has one of the largest prison systems on the planet. One of the causes of recidivism is difficulty integrating into the world after release, and one of the main reasons for that, is that released offenders is that all too often they are un-hirable. Not simply because they are ex-convicts, and a vast majority of businesses won't even think of giving them a chance, but also because, depending on the length of their sentence, they may be thoroughly unprepared to re-integrate with their communities.

Books, fiction and otherwise, do help.

Check this article for good advice on how to donate books to prisons--and keep in mind, you can donate used books in good condition; all it would cost you is the media rate postage. The piece includes a fairly diverse list of organizations that aim to get books into the hands of people who are incarcerated.

I can think of about 30 different places I’d sooner donate used books to rather than to losers in prison.

For those among us with humanity in our make up, here's a direct link to donate lbgtqia+ books to prisons.

Here's another incredibly worthy cause where you can donate books: Library Liberation (link) makes books available to children held in Illinois prisons.

Also, the maintain an amazon wishlist (here)

Re: Donate your books...to prisons.

This is a great cause; thanks for this thread, AZ.

I tend not to hang on to books that i'm done with for too long. I usually give them away anyway, and Formerly A Farm Boy's library is no longer accepting donations (although it seems likely that Project Gutenberg is still rolling along).

It can be expensive to mail large amounts of paper, so it's nice that the article you linked offers so many different contact organizations, it allows me to find someplace reasonably close, which should help keep the postage cost down.

As a lot of people probably already know, the criminalization of the populace of the United States, and the cultural insanity behind the prison industry in the US, are issues that mean a lot to me personally. I won't clutter this thread with a lengthy rant, but i personally think these programs are of vital importance for a significant number of people.

When bought through the astore, they also help support this site, which isn't self-sufficient and doesn't hold fund-raisers or any of that other crap.

Please consider doing at least some of your holiday shopping through our astore this year.

Hard agree on all this.
