Re: The Rap/Hip Hop Thread

I guess I'm not a fan of rap or hip-hop because they're obviously atrocious spellers.

Yup, at least the Beatles could do that. Wait...

Re: The Rap/Hip Hop Thread

I'm a big time rap and hip-hop fan, and I have been since back in the RunDMC/Doug E. Fresh/Original Too Short days. These days, unless the delivery is very unique and/or the beat/music is just crazy, I shy away from most "Radio Rap". I'm kind of a sucker for a super-tight beat, so there are some songs that I like that float around here and there, but I'm against most songs that glorify negative behavior or focus on bragging about financial or material status. If I hear another song about rims and strippers on the radio, I think that I'm going to scream. It's not that I have a problem with those things at all, it's just that I'm so sick of hearing so many copycat songs and artists pushed so hard in the industry, while real talent is passed by.

Like alot of you, I tend toward old-school, underground, and positive artists and groups.

A few of my favorites:

Mos Def
A Tribe Called Quest
Common
Foreign Exchange
Pharoahe Monch
Cee-Lo
OutKast

and then of course I have a soft spot for the locals, such as:

Digital Underground
Del
Heiroplyphics
E-40

I'm sure I'll be back with more.

Thanks for making the thread, Crandy!

Re: The Rap/Hip Hop Thread

Just a couple of weeks ago I witnessed De La Soul (with Prince Paul) at the Pitchfork festival in Chicago. They are amazing live.

Oooh! Jedi Mind Tricks! Also, anyone like Subtle?

Re: The Rap/Hip Hop Thread

Coolie High by Camp Lo (just about anything by Camp Lo)

Ghetto Chick by Three 6 Mafia

I've been listening to a lot of "old school" lately. Some of Dr. Dre's early rhymes. Dre knows how to drop the beat every time.

More to come...

Re: The Rap/Hip Hop Thread

50 can be a real drama queen and attention whore sometimes, lol.

This is from Perez Hilton:
Quote:

50 Cent has vowed to quit releasing music if Kanye West sells more records than him when their albums are both released on the same day next month, September 11th.

“Let’s raise the stakes,” Fiddy said yesterday. “If Kanye West sells more records than 50 Cent on September 11, I’ll no longer [perform] music. I’ll write music and work with my other artists, but I won’t put out any more solo albums.”

We all know he’s lying. But, just in case, we’re gonna buy ten copies of Kanyeizzle’s new album!

Re: The Rap/Hip Hop Thread

More incentive to buy Kanye's CD. Yay!

I already wasn't a huge 50 fan, but over time, and especially after his comments about Nas reading too much , I realize that I am developing more and more of a serious dislike for him.

Re: The Rap/Hip Hop Thread

I was, and still am a bit of a 50 fan, but he's been turning me off of him with some stuff going on lately.

And that Nas thing he said was ridiculous.

I'm really hoping Kanye will do well. Not in spite of 50, but just to show he can go up against someone who's more commerical and still hold his own. 50's music is all starting to sound so much the same lately, at least Kanye shakes things up.
