I love the Flaming Lips! Wayne Coyne FTW.

If anything goes wrong, Brian will be my constant.

Re: The Official Commercial Song Thread

So awesome to have found this thread!

Remember bootleg tapes? Other than live shows, bootleg tapes were the best way to hear new, emerging bands - only played on college radio and sold in a handful of record stores. Pylon was one of those bands for me. I first heard a bootleg tape of their 1980 single "Cool/Dub" on DB Records (the same Athens, GA label that released "Rock Lobster" in 1978). Very few of my friends even heard of them and far less had actually heard their music. They remained obscure and never really toured nationally or signed to a major label, like REM the band they influenced.

So to hear "Cool' in the new Lexus campaign was stunning. I initially thought the song was coming through my phone. New, emerging bands often break nationally from use in TV spots but Pylon didn't fit that description over 35 years ago. They didn't release a lot of music and never really got out of Athens. Thing is, the music is timeless. It's so simple and stripped down rock and roll that it would sound the same played today or back in 1950. It would sound the same if you played it - and you probably could, since Pylon were a bunch of art students when they picked up instruments for the first time. They went on to become "the elder statesmen of the post-punk explosion" kind of like a southern Sonic Youth, though not as well-known and certainly nowhere near as well-heard.
