Re: NFL Thread Pt. II

*Try and hold it together*

Antonio Ramiro "Tony" Romo is retiring after 14 years as the QB of "America's Team". The Dallas Cowboys released him today, and he's supposedly going to address the media within the next couple of days.

Again, 4-time Pro Bowler, Tony Romo was released by the Dallas Cowboys, and will retire from the NFL.

What's his plans after retirement? He's going into the booth, replacing Phill Sims at CBS and partnering with Jim Nantz. *Okay, I said I wasn't going to cry*

Re: NFL Thread Pt. II

I think he'll do well as the lead analyst at CBS (he'll have his fellow ex-Cowboy QB Aikman to motivate him on the other network). And his decision is wise from a health standpoint--it's just too hard to come back from a collarbone injury (or two) in football.

Not sure where this leaves the Texans, who seemed sure of acquiring him.

Not a bad career--and wasn't his final pass a touchdown?

Peggy, don't forget those two back surgeries.

This really leaves them in the lurch.

This is what they get for not offering the 'Boys something in the way of a trade. They're now stuck with a "career backup" and the Draft.

Peggy, in your estimation, is it a HOF career?

Oh, and to answer your question. Yes!

Two playoff wins, no Super Bowl appearances; even the guy Tony replaced, Drew Bledsoe, has a better postseason record than that, and no one ever talks about his Hall potential. So, I think it will be a while.

That said, there are many more factors that make up a football career, and I think he must be satisfied with his.

Re: NFL Thread Pt. II

I don't think Romo is a HOF player. He had a very successful career in many ways, and he was one of the elite qb's in the league for a (brief) time, but i don't think his career numbers are good enough for Canton. He probably belongs in the Dallas Cowboys HOF, if there is one (and if there ain't there oughtta be), but not the NFL's. Sorry, Hodge. JMO.

ETA: My opinion may eventually not be borne out, because after all, unlike so many sportswriters, i: am not a Dallas Cowboys fan; and i tend to think that in terms of things like HOF, qb should be considered as just another position.

Mr. Mo, they have "the Ring of Honor". No doubt, he'll be there in the near future.

On a sad note:

Not sure if we have any "Pittsburgh Steelers" fans, but Dan Rooney, owner died today at 84.

Really a great guy. Unlike Jerry Jones, everyone loved and admired him.

Something I posted a couple of years ago, I'd like to repost.

Actresses Kate and Rooney Mara, star of the movie, Shooter and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo respectively, are, as well as the
Mara's, the owners of the New York Giants grand-daughters.

I don't particularly care for Simms as a broadcaster, but why doesn't he just take a step down the ladder? Dick Enberg continued announcing NFL even on the third tier, and guys like Brent Musburger and Marv Albert had to work their way back to the top in their own sports. And we really don't know what Romo will bring to the booth, other than a breath of fresh air.

Meanwhile, does anyone think there's anything to the controversy about Eli Manning and "game-used" memorabilia? I'm no Manning fan, but I think it's much ado about zip:

I have mentioned this before, Barron Hilton was one of the original AFL owners when Lamar Hunt started the league. Daddy Conrad eventually told him that owning a football team was okay for him to do while he was young but he was going get serious, sell the team, and join the family's respectable business of hotel management. He did, the new owner moved the team to San Diego so as not to compete for fans with the Rams.
