sleeping issues

Hi all, I didn't see a forum for this yet so thought I'd post this.

The last year or so I've developed this sleeping issue, where typically I'm waking up at 2 or 3 am and have huge problems getting back to sleep. I've always had insomnia, so for many years I've been taking valerian root and melatonin to help me get to sleep. The last year those have not been working so well (I'm assuming I've built a tolerance), so I've added doxylamine succinate to the mix. I tried diphenhydramine, but that dries me out really bad plus sometimes has the opposite effects and wires me instead of making me drowsy. I tried Ambien, and discovered I sleepwalk on Ambien, so that's out unless I want to strap myself into bed.

So...I wanted to see if anyone had other suggestions for things to try. I've done chamomille tea, that seems to have no effect (though yummy.)

Has anyone ever tried listening to delta waves on headphones, does that work?

It wouldn't hurt to try it. There are a lot of choices on Pandora or Youtube. I always need some soothing background noise to sleep.

So many things out these days that are supposed to help people achieve and stay asleep, that's a youthful dream isn't it.

I've known people using a fan just to make the white noise that helps them fall asleep. Even in winter the fan is humming for them.

When I started out on my low carb life style I was sleeping like a baby log. However, now three years in to it I'm taking much longer to fall asleep. I try to be down to between 20-50 carbs a day. It is also called Ketogenic diet if you are interested in it. I do find that a lot of carbohydates during the day keep me up at night, too.

And although I love my husband dearly, and we "visit" if you know what I mean, I sleep in my own bed so my tossing and turning doesn't bother him and his snoring doesn't bother me.

Why did your doctor go all the way to Ambien right away? That seems like prescribing thorazine for depression. There are plenty of other prescription sleep aids that aren't as insane as Ambien. Maybe try trazodone?

Probably because he has incentives to do so. I just recently read something that said 65% or more of doctors receive "donations" from certain companies, basically in order to push their ****. Crazy...

I've had very similar issues over the last year or so.

When I was younger I had trouble falling asleep, now I have no problem falling asleep, but often wake up at 3 or 4 and have trouble getting back to sleep. I think most meds are designed to help you fall asleep but that isn't my problem.

I used to be able to sleep through anything, but now the slightest noise will wake me up.

To be honest, I just kind of accept it now. Not sure if it's stress or just getting old. I go to bed a little earlier than I used to so I can get some sleep before the inevitable early wake up. I'm also getting into work earlier than I ever did. Most days I'm in by 7.

i specifically asked my doc about ambien as i had seen the ads on tv. i don't blame him for my jumping to that option. and mattie is correct, tho i pretty much trust my doc as on the level.

I use an air purifier. So I get the white noise and the air I'm sleeping in is cleaner.

Possible helps:
- Take a walk earlier in the day (approx. 2 miles)
- It is being posited that the glowing screens we stare at (phones, monitors, tv) should be abstained from like 3 hours before bedtime. You could look into that.
- How's the blood pressure?
- Are the pillows, mattress, teddy bear getting old? Losing support?
- Ever try using a body pillow (or a reasonable facsimile)? I did it once and have never stopped
- of course the usual: lessen caffiene, salt and sugar intake in general, don't eat or exercise 3 hours before.
