American Gods - Starz Sunday

American Gods,
starring Ian McShane,
premieres this Sunday, April 30th at 9/8c on Starz.

About
More:
"American Gods," adapted from Neil Gaiman's acclaimed contemporary fantasy novel, will make its network premiere on Sunday, April 30th at 9PM ET/PT.

"American Gods" posits a different kind of war brewing - one between Old Gods and New. The traditional Old Gods, with mythological roots from around the world, fear irrelevance as their believers die off or are seduced by the money, technology, and celebrity offered by the New Gods. Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) is an ex-con who, left adrift by the recent death of his wife, becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to conman Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane). But in truth, Mr. Wednesday is a powerful old deity, on a cross-country mission to build an army and reclaim his lost glory."

This looks like the next best thing since sliced bread, Sandi.

I'll definitely be sitting in front of the telly for this one.

"I am trying to get my dignity back here!"
pssst ... epic fail, Audrey -- epic fail!

I loved this first episode! Overall, the acting was excellent and the story is unfolding at a good pace. Loved the sets, particularly Shadow Moon's dreams -- or were they visions of some kind?

It appears the two sides are forming - those aligned with Mr. Wednesday and those aligned against him. It looks like Mad Sweeney is on Mr. Wednesday's side and I would love to know the significance of that coin he gave Shadow Moon sinking down under the dirt of Laura's grave. I knew that was going to happen when it landed there and I had just about given up on seeing it happen and then -- it did.

Bilquis, the Goddess of Love
OMG! At first, I thought it was just the camera angle. Then I thought she was getting a lot bigger and boy was I surprised when her vagina devoured that man completely!

And Shadow Moon's strange meeting with the Technology God! Who, by the way, reminded me of a kewpie doll or Martin Short's character, Ed Grimley.

It's probably Mr. Wednesday who keeps rescuing Shadow Moon from his near-death experiences. I have to admit, the hanging rescue was particularly gory which took me by surprise. But I'm okay with that now that I know TPTB will use those kind of visuals.

Whats up with the fire-shooting-eyeballed giant buffalo?

HMoG! The most visually stunning thing I've seen in ages.

And, along with being visually stunning, you can see where TPTB are going with the story. This is definitely a war. The old Gods against the new Gods.

I got the feeling, Mad Sweeney, the "Leprechaun" was just trying to see if Shadow Moon had what it took to be in the employ of Mr. Wednesday. That was a HELL of a fight. You also notice, while playing darts, he never missed the bullseye? Just damn!

Bilquis, "Goddess of Love" devoured that guy. But, just like you mentioned, Sandi, she gorged him.

One more thing...Not sure why, but I don't believe Laura was unfaithful to Shadow Moon. Although, I did get the feeling Mr. Wednesday had something to do with her and that guys death. He apparently really wants Shadow Moon to work for him.

Oh, and I almost forgot..."Don't piss off the women at the airport"

Re: American Gods - Starz Sunday (Premieres April 30th)

I don't even know what to say without massive spoiling, since I've read the book.

But, if you've ever read and book and thought about how amazing it would be on screen? And then it comes to screen, and they screw it up?

THEY DID NOT SCREW THIS UP.

The casting is ON POINT.

The narrative structure, with starting out with the Vikings coming to America, and the [guy with the book whose name I don't think they've said on the show yet ] before going into Shadow's story. Teasing with Bilquis scene. I love how they are leading the story on right from the start.

As soon as I heard "Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday" I just about peed myself. And it really is that amazing. He is CHEWING this role. Beyond perfect casting.

Shadow Moon is also doing a fantastic job.

SHADOW MOON'S CELL MATE AKNLDNALKNDKNLS DYING OVER HERE.

When Mad Sweeney started pulling coins out of the air and I knew the fight was about to start, I got excited. BUT HOW AWESOME WAS THAT FIGHT?

Oh. Oh. I'm beside myself. I'm all a-flutter.

And I can tell ya'll, next episode is going to be gooooood. This is seriously not even touching on the top of this story yet.

I feel like I have to give another Mad Sweeney squeal right now. HE WAS PERFECT. omg. Perfect.

How do they make the show look so cool? The colors are supernormal, how VIVID the blood is, the directing and the way they're playing with time in different shots, even just the shot of the coin flip delighting me. The musical choices are perfect. I keep saying perfect.

This is perfect.

If they keep on this faithfully to the source material, throughout the show-- because it is one of the best books I've ever read, and they're doing an amazing job of translating the surreality to the screen.

Wow.

Just... wow.

Just looked at the rest of the thread, and you have Guy-With-Book's name actually posted here, so I figure I can say it.

Mr. Ibis I squealed when I saw him in the opening scene.
