Just about to watch the first episode now. My mother read all Gerald Durrell's Corfu books out loud to us when we were young. We loved them and would laugh hysterically during most chapters. Imagine my surprise when I just read in the WSJ review of the series that Lawrence aka Larry Durrell was actually married when they moved to Corfu, not single as Gerald has him in the books. Memoir/fiction - it's a fine line!

Just finished watching. It is a very different tone from Gerry Durrell's books. The books were much more humorous and obviously, were told from his ten year old point of view. This series is really much more about his mother which is quite a different perspective. But overall, I found it enjoyable although I thought the pace was a little plodding. Perhaps it will pick up as the series goes.

Brdmom, there's only 6 episodes in this first season. In your opinion, is that enough to tell the whole story?

Re: The Durrells in Corfu - PBS Sunday

Hodge - did you ever read My Family and Other Animals or Birds, Beasts and Relatives? There wasn't really a narrative arc - Larry's crazy friends came and went. Gerry had various tutors. They moved houses. Gerry collected animals/insects/birds of all types and brought them home with various humorous results. There were various encounters with the Corfu natives. There wasn't much character development - Larry was rather pompous and full of himself, Leslie was obsessed with guns and boats, Margo was flighty, and Mother came across as completely dotty and overwhelmed by her children, and my impression of her was that she was old - of course, I was about ten when my mother read the books to us, so anyone old enough to have children in their twenties (over forty) seemed ancient to me! Funny how that doesn't seem so old now...

So, I imagine the television writers can pick or choose what to include - already they have included scenes that I don't remember from the books, and I have reread them since my childhood. I'm intrigued to see how they continue with the series.
