can't disagree, AC/DC has ruled since they established. still played, still touring, and hats off to any band that I know your tune within 3 notes of the opening. (and hats off to any da** lead guitarist who can pull off wearing a schoolboy outfit, that's bal**y)

Re: this or that

Rush or Floyd....Rush holds a dear place in my heart, got me through many younger years as an angry young one.....the musical precision gave me a channel to focus on (bad amateur drummer here, butchered many Rush tunes. Never got my press rolls right..sigh). Bad keyboardist too, I bought an Oberheim Matrix to get the Rush synth sound. eta: points for Rush changing time signatures in the middle of songs, I love that complicated sheet.

Floyd...I have no negatives, it's pretty much perfect music.

Re: this or that

Tough call, both are absolutely phenomenal at what they do. They do vastly different things, though, albeit under the very large umbrella of Rock & Roll.

Other than changing lead guitar after the first album, Rush has been the same three guys for their entire existence, and to be fair, unlike almost all rock bands, the lead guitar player was the background/pocket guy anyway. Pink Floyd has gone through more personnel changes than i can easily recall.

Rush always had vision, and one thing that i value very highly in rock music: velocity. Velocity implies not only speed, but direction. PF often had a tendency to meander a bit.

The flashes of pure brilliance shown by PF throughout the years outshine anything Rush ever created, and that's saying something, because Rush has had some impressive flashes of brilliance themselves. If the PF catalog was limited to Dark Side, The Wall, Animals, Wish You Were Here, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and Division Bell, the decision would fairly easily go to them.

However, they also released a bunch of stuff that is not as enjoyable as any Rush album ever, and some of it is almost unlistenable. A Momentary Lapse of Money is an album that performed well commercially, but i personally don't care for it as a whole. Obscured By Clouds is little-known, and it meanders quite a bit, but i enjoy it in limited doses. There are a few other albums about which it is difficult to say anything positive.

Rush has a higher bottom line, in other words, but they also can't reach as high.

In terms of personal taste, i prefer Pink Floyd overall, but i can understand and appreciate that there's a solid argument for Rush.

Re: this or that

nicely stated Mr Mo. Gotta admire both bands carving niches for themselves - you hear a bit of their tunes, you know who the band is immediately.

eta: think you mean "momentary lapse of reason'

Re: this or that

Oh, i'm familiar with the official album title, and i know i said what i meant. They put the band back together at that point because their solo careers were doing poorly, and the classic rock stations (and let's not forget the all-powerful record label and distributors) at the time were clamoring for a new studio PF album - it had been a long time.

Re: this or that

I've been reading this thread, but haven't chimed in until now. So here's my

Springsteen over Petty and it's not even close. Tom Petty is not really my cup of tea, something about his voice doesn't really work for me. On the other hand I think Springsteen is absolutely brilliant. Love the sound and feel of so many of his songs, from his big hits like Dancing in the Dark, Born to Run and Glory Days, to his lesser known masterpieces like Tunnel of Love.

I can't say I'm a classical music guy at all so Mozart vs. Bach is a push for me (I know I need more culture).

For medical dramas I'd have to go with ER over House or St. Elsewhere that's really only because I watched ER, but never really got into the others.

ACDC over ZZ Top. ACDC was the kick butt band of my youth. I didn't really know ZZ Top before Legs so to me they are just a fun, novelty band.

Boston over Chicago band wise. I've been to Boston, but only to the Chicago airport (and the Sheraton Gateway close to O'Hare) so can't give an informed decision City wise.

Rush over Pink Floyd. I think Rush are great, another band I grew up with and I was exposed a lot to them since I grew up in Canada and a lot of radio stations had to have mandatory Canadian content, the talent of all of three is phenomenal. Pink Floyd is a band that I kind of like, but not sure I ever really gave them enough of a chance to truly appreciate them.

Picasso over Dali, but I'm not really super familiar with their work. I find Dali's melting clocks and eccentric personality a little offputting, but that's just me.

Keep it up guys, I'm enjoying this thread!

Re: this or that

Steely Dan, Peg or FM.....particularly tough choice this one

my opinion....Peg is a beautiful upbeat tune, but I gotta give it to FM. It puts me in a romantic frame of mind, which is tougher than upbeat. Plus it's more unusual in its progression.
