Re: The NFL Thread Pt. II

Can I take this opportunity to say that I really liked the old unis with Pat on the helmet and still much prefer that to the streaked face, which I think looks rather skeletal.

Re: The NFL Thread Pt. II

What do you guys think about the Brady rule? How much can they keep changing the principals of the game? In football people end up on the ground. With this new Brady rule defenders can not hit the QB on the knee or below the knee...If the defender lunges out and grabs at him from the ground...like Pollar did to Brady...the knee is the place hes going to get......no no....

Defenders fall down...seriously...now they have to get back up or hit them above the knee.
I undersatnd protecting the QB..but its getting to the point where you cant even get near the QB...protecting their investments I guess...but seriously this is football...next ya wont be able to breath on them...

Im okay on the Heinz Ward rule, I guess...taking out the blind side helmet to helmet...but are we protecting the quarterback to much? How much more protection do they need?

I think its a knee jerk reaction...once again. The should have looked at fixing the Overtime Rules. They need help.

Re: The NFL Thread Pt. II

I don't particularly like the Brady rule, and I'm a Pats fan. Stuff happens in the game. They should just put QBs on a Segway(sp?) and forbid any contact.

The old Pats helmet was always one of my favorite helmets.

I'm disappointed that the Texans won't play the Cowboys this preseason like usual because of conflicting schedules. The Cowboys new stadium shares the parking lot with the Texas Rangers stadium and the Rangers have a baseball game scheduled the week the Cowboys/Texans usually play each other. I guess I will just have to make fun of Hodge during the season.

There are just too many ACL injuries, and they're always season-killers. Until more protection is developed for knees, I reluctantly endorse this rule. I don't like excessive QB coddling (like when Peyton Manning was given 15 yards and a fresh set of downs to win the Championship Game two years ago, because some official imagined Tully Banta-Cain came within a foot of touching Manning's helmet). The knee, however, is an underprotected area. I just hope the officials don't use the "if in doubt, flag it" approach to enforcing the rule.

As for overtime, agreed! The answer is to have the kicking team kick off from the 40, not the 30. A deeper field will reduce the chances of a fast field goal, giving the other team a shot at the ball, evening the odds (which favor the flip-winner too much).

Re: The NFL Thread Pt. II

IMHO:
I'm so tired of hearing that today's players are bigger, stronger & faster than before. They might be a li'l bigger, more bulked up (not necessarily stronger) & a tad faster, but lack the durability & toughness of the old players. Take into account the old skool rules. Honestly lotsa today's players wouldn't make it thru a season of pre-1980's football.

Football just ain't as tough as it used to be...

I get sick of hearing the argument about how QB's are "an investment that has to be protected". Were guys like Unitas, Bradshaw, Staubach, Tarkenton, etc. any less important to their teams as the guys are these days?

They certainly didn't have the protection rules that are being instituted today.

One problem I foresee with all these new rules... they will end up going too far with them. Too many knee-jerk reactions (no pun intended) and too much protection for the QB's will end up biting the league in the ass. One of these days the league will realize they are protecting the QB's too much and by then it will be too late. Because how do you take back the protection rules once you put them in place without all the owners and QB's whining, crying and pitching a major damned fit about it in the media? You can't.

Re: The NFL Thread Pt. II

The Tennessee Titans are wearing the Houston Oilers uniforms three times next year. First time since '96 that they will be worn. I really hate Bud Adams.

Re: The NFL Thread Pt. II

Well, the wore the Oilers uniforms for the first season that they were in Tennessee, IIRC, as the Tennessee Oilers.
