Re: Doctor Who S10E05 - "Oxygen"

It appears that in this episode the Doctor is on a space station, therefore not on Earth.

From "Smile":
Quote:
The Doctor: A long time ago, a thing happened. As a result of the thing, I made a promise. As a result of the promise, I have to stay on Earth. So.
(this "promise" has also been termed as an "oath")

I'm sure it will be explained in the episode how it is that he is off-planet, but I have a different question.
If the Doctor went back in time, before he made the promise, could he then go off-planet?
Then from there, go into the future?
If not, then at any other time that he (Doctor #1 to Present) has ever been off-planet (pan-promise*), was he in violation of this oath/promise?

Many wonder about what is in the vault, and I do too. But I am more interested in the "thing" that "happened" that started all this.

*presumably the promise has a start and ending date. I have read somewhere that this started "70 years ago" but I don't know/recall what supports that statement.

I don't consider The Doctor breaking any promise when he leaves as long as he returns at the same time he left. Since there would be no break in his linear time spent on earth, I think he's still fulfulling his promise as anything on earth would be subject to the same linear time.

Sounds good to me, but now I'm thinking certain assumptions may be wrong.

Staying on Earth may have nothing to do with the "promise" itself, that is, he may not have promised to stay on Earth specifically. Rather, it may be that he (and Nardol) initially presumed that he would have to stay on Earth in order to keep the promise, whatever it is. Perhaps it will turn out that they will see a way around it.

Re: Doctor Who S10E05 - "Oxygen"

Finally got to watching this.

And WOW, this is more like it.

That was flat out fun, with my first real Bill emotions (reminded me of that one with Martha, early on, where he is being taken over by the Sun-Monsters).

I love a good old Space Station episode.

As soon as he said that "when we die, the station explodes" I knew what he was doing and why. Awesomeness. That was, indeed, clever.

And Capaldi playing blind is great.

I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS IN THE GODDAMN VAULT.

As if a mere vault could hold the Master.
