Re: Rate The Last Movie You Watched

Pirates of the Caribbeanead Men Tell No Tales 5/10.
The story was boring mostly, although there were a few decent performances. Geofrey Rush was solid as Barbosa as usual, and the new supporting characters were ok. Mostly, I hate the portrayal the writers and director promoted of Jack Sparrow.

I saw the original Pirates on cable last night, and that Jack Sparrow was so much less drunk, more cunning, less baffoonish, more cad like, and overall more fun. This new representation of a drunken, mumbling, lucky loser sucks. The original Jack was more understated and brilliant. And I blame the writing and directing decisions. Honestly, it makes me mad how they have turned a great character into a caraciture.

Speaking of good acting, just want to point out the great performance by Bill Irwin as Tars. That Gumby-like robot was so human, despite looking so metallic.

Loving 8/10. Based on the declared-illegal-in-Virginia marriage of (biracial) Mildred and (white) Richard Loving. Beautifully done but I wanted to know more about what was going on in Richard's head, and I'd have liked to see him interact more with his kids, since their "racial status" was the state's supposed reason for the marriage to be illegal. And the lawyers having their own agenda didn't mean they needed to be drawn so stereotypically. But Mildred (Ruth Negga) was really interesting and subtle, and their love of each other and the countryside was very well done.

She was nominated for an Oscar too.

Re: Rate The Last Movie You Watched

Nocturnal Animals 8 out of 10 but with reservations.

A hoity-toity gallerista receives the manuscript of a novel written by her ex-husband. (When she opens the package, she gets a vicious paper cut. That omen should have warned her.) The film goes back and forth between the gallerista's reality and (her viewpoint of?) the violent story told by the novel. Like Tom Ford's previous film, A Single Man, this is beautiful and stays with you. But this is, in every other way, a totally different look at love.

Reservations -- The opening credits are incredibly uncomfortable to watch. You'll find out soon enough what's going on but that won't make you any less queasy. The novel-within-the-film is also pretty rough going.

Catch up on a few:

War of the PoA: 5/10- nothing too great here, allusions to the beginnings

Wonder Woman: 8/10- thought it was really good, love Gadot as WW.

Valerian: 6/10 Like Fifth Element on steroids.

Terminator:Genisys 7/10. Special effects were great but the story was a convoluted mess and absolutely no sparks between Sarah and Reese.

Re: Rate The Last Movie You Watched

My Cousin Rachel 8, maybe even 9 out 10

Story in a non-spoilery (I hope) nutshell--the man of the house goes to Italy for his health, where, much to the surprise of his young cousin and heir back in England, he meets a woman.

I haven't read the book so I was completely surprised by just about everything that happens in this movie. The performances are great (well, duh, it's Rachel Weisz, when has she been anything short of terrific) including from the servants who aren't used to having a woman in the house.

The movie looks setting-appropriate, which is purposefully ambiguous but sometime in the mid-1800s. Even though the book was written in the 1950s, and in most ways feels like it's from a century earlier, Rachel's concerns felt quite modern.

War for the Planet of the Apes - 9/10

I was impressed and appreciated the callbacks to the original. These films made me completely forget about Tim Burton's abomination.
