I re-read the Sandman thread last night. The only thing stopping me from re-reading the series is the thought of going through that emotional wringer again. Took a while last time to get over it.
That's odd. I re-read your first read thread last night.

gift cards make great gifts both for shoppers who are lazy and/or have a lot of gifts to buy. They're also a shrewd choice if there are individuals in your life for whom it is difficult to shop. When bought through the astore, they also help support this site, which isn't self-sufficient and doesn't hold fund-raisers or any of that other crap.

Please consider doing at least some of your holiday shopping through our astore this year.

Amazing characters and good plotting. It gets intense but it's not Morpheus tear-your-hair-out insane.

Vonne, what do you count as "number one" of the volumes? I've been asked by people who know I read comics which one to start with. Since I don't really like the Overture, I hesitate to recommend it. Besides, I love how the original Issue 1 begins with a character being told to wake up.
I count Preludes as number 1.

I liked Overture a lot, but it should definitely come at the end.

I agree with that. As i mentioned on WN, i think the reader should read the Death books as well, before moving on to Overture. In fact, i'd recommend both Death books before reading The Kindly Ones.

ETA: I got into this series when it was still in its first print run. The Kindly Ones was being released an issue at a time, while both Death books were already available in graphic novel format.

As for re-reads, Maturin -

The series won't hit you the same way on re-reads. You'll pick up on TONS of nuance you missed the first time through, and the artful construction of the narrative really only shone through for me when I knew how it all ends. I also didn't appreciate the way Gaiman picked different artists for different story arcs until my second time through.

Re: Book Review -- "Sandman," Neil Gaiman

Mo and Vonne, thanks for the book order suggestions. I'm especially hung up on the order problem right now because I read Gaiman's Miracleman: Golden Age without first reading the Alan Moore books preceding it because I was already familiar with the mythology. Big mistake. I thought the Gaiman was ok, but after I went back and read through Moore's amazing (head-explodingly amazing) Miracleman series, I re-read the Gaiman and realized just how brilliant what Gaiman did was.
