Re: Richard III

Forgot I took this while in London, as it was hanging over our restaurant table.

You're welcome

Re: Richard III

Aww, what a sweet girl you are Catnap to think of Maturin like that.

However, I do know that is Henry the 8th, but I do not know how Maturin feels about him. He was a Tudor right? So maybe you are teasing her or taunting her.

I just got back from a trip and I brought presents too. Unlike SOME people, I chose nice ones, something thoughtful for every person here. But I'm returning all of them, even the Shetland pony for scot! That's right. It's because of catnap and Henry the Rude VIII that we can't have nice things.

Which London restaurant was it, catnap? Someone should probably call the health department.

Another historic site is getting on the RIII gravy train. King Richard apparently visited Tutbury Castle for a few days and the current castle PR machine is setting up exhibits and carnival arcades to bring in the shillings. It's located in (no surprise) the Duchy of Lancaster. Lancasters: Forever grifting.

Re: Richard III

I've patiently been waiting for your return, Maturin, to this rampant silliness taking place in your absence.

The comment about Henry the rude VIII made me remember how many rulers of old Poland were named. There was Miesko the Slothful, Kazimierz the restorer, Boleslaw the curly, and my personal favorite name, Wladlslaw the spitter. I recently read "A Traveller's History of Poland" and learned alot. However, I retain minimal info, but these names stick with me.

Oh yeah, welcome back

Re: Richard III

Tnx for the welcome back, 9mile.

I read a theory somewhere that Americans tend to see Britain as the main player in European history but that the story of Europe should really be more Germanic-oriented. (This theory was obviously not written by a French person. )

Poland ought to be included as part of that story base as well -- just looking up those kings' names, you see Poland as a power back in 900s and probably before, taking it right to the Germans, and then later always being in the middle of modern power struggles.

But I think Mieszko the Slothful may have been Shakestudored by history a bit. Wikipedia seems to think the Slothful nickname was unfair and maybe came after his reign, and that he was a capable king and as war-hungry as any early monarch. The RIII thread feels his pain at the injustice of history.

Some excellent names throughout the wiki account. Mieszko was succeeded as Duke by Boleslaw the Forgotten.

Re: Richard III

It's happening again. Archaeologists are doing a radar search of a parking lot near Reading, England, this time in hopes of finding the bones of King Henry I.

This Henry was a son of William the Conqueror, and the grandfather of the first Plantagenet king. Henry I's life story essentially reads like Game of Thrones -- he came to the throne when his brother, King William Rufus, was shot by an arrow while they were hunting together. Accidents happen.

Henry was apparently a strong but very harsh king. He died tragically after eating too much fish, and was buried at the Reading abbey. Several layers of history are also buried there, so this search is more uncertain than the one for Richard III.

In related news, the Leicestudor City Council has called dibs on Henry's bones and is already building an amusement park to serve as the new burial site.

Re: Richard III

I'm not sure if you are serious about the theme park by H1's burial site. I seemed to remember a ride at an amusement park called "The Boneyard".
I looked it it under the premise of
"Ride the Bone Yard" and was a little worried about what might pop up during this internet search. Luckily nothing too dirty showed up. However, wouldn't you know it, Orlando has a play park that is centered around an archeological dig theme.

Finishing up my thought here, if it is a serious comment on your part, Maturin, then maybe it will be like this place I've posted about.
