Could TWD survive without Rick?

Can this show continue without Rick Grimes' character??

I personally feel there is no other character to take on the "lead man" role so I'd be very sceptical if Rick was killed off.

Any thoughts??

Maybe for 1 season, but then it would be done. Since the opening scene of this series, he has been the center of the show. Kill him off, and there remains no center.

Re: Could TWD survive without Rick?

ollie- great post! My opinion is the show would survive. Maggie Rhee is a bad ass, and os who I assume would take the lead. That is until Judith Walsh Grimes is ready.

The show has been centered on Rick, and so it would be strange seeing someone else take the lead. Carl could be a natural as well. I agree Daryl isnt the leader type, but I would be most intrigued if he took charge. His character evolving into "the man" would be something the fans would really embrace.

Alternatively, I question whether the show can survive much longer with Rick as leader. 7-8 seasons worth would be a pretty good run for Andrew Lincoln. The death of Rick Grimes? It's hard to imagine TWD without him. But it would be interesting to see if he dies' who assumes the lead' and how his absence affects our other main characters.

Re: Could TWD survive without Rick?

I guess the reason I think TWD would struggle without Rick is hte same reason I think FearTWD sucks balls. It has no real center character the show revolves around. Not really. There is no central character like Rick, not one as likeable anyway. It has struggled because of it, among others things (like crappy writing).

Re: Could TWD survive without Rick?

absolutely it could. Rick is the centerpiece around which the show was created, however as several other powerful characters have developed over time, he could be lost. first and foremost IMO...Maggie. could easily step up, take Rick's role, and even provide a parental figure to Carl tho they aren't related. she's more relate-able to the group, and hasn't gone mental at times (Rick re Lori and halllucinations).

Interesting spin.

The reason I asked the question is I just don't see how the show can continue in it's present form. We've had season after season of Rick v *insert badass*, and this part of the show has run its course, for me at least. I don't want or need to see this happening time and again. I want something different from the show, something to take it in a different direction.

So, I have a feeling that something is going to happen to enable this and the obvious thing is to kill Rick. As long as he's alive I think TWD will always be Rick v *insert badass*. If he's dead then the show can go off in a different direction.

I think Maggie would be the only current cast member with the potential to do it, but it would depend on the direction the show went.

Re: Could TWD survive without Rick?

Carol could make and excellent and natural leader, although she'd have to go through a little soul searching first. It could be done in a single episode, or drawn out into an arc, as the writers desire.

Not to discount Maggie. They'd make great co-leaders, too, maybe even make a small council if there are enough total survivors and they all band together.
