Wow...what have you done for us lately, Joe?

Fail to ask for a replay review and you can pack your bags.

Kind of reminds me of Grady Little when he was fired from the Sox (with an "x", Hodge) essentially because he left Pedro Martinez in too long back in the Series of '03.

Of course, Boston ended up with Francona. Wonder who NY will go with.

Re: Joe Girardi not returning...

I didn't expect this exactly, but i definitely was wondering about it, knowing his contract was over. It's a little surprising given what was accomplished with the team he had this year, but not terribly surprising all things considered; if i'd heard in spring training that this was going to be his last season i wouldn't be surprised at all, and realistically that was probably when the decision was made.

He had a fine run, and a reasonably long one too. He's a fine manager who could do any franchise proud, and i'm sure he'll land on his feet. Hopefully he goes to the Nationals, that's a franchise where he could really shine, and i think they'd do well with him.

As for who's next, i really don't know. Mattingly maybe?

Re: Joe Girardi not returning...

My tinfoil theory is that Girardi goes to the Marlins and then Mattingly comes to the Nats.

I cannot describe the Girardi Fever sweeping DC. My guess is that the Nats wish the Yankees had waited to fire him until after DC hired a new manager so they could avoid all the fan and media pressure. I feel sorry for Dave Martinez or whoever they hire if he isn't absolute perfection -- he'll get an earful of "See, shoulda gone with Girardi" every time something goes wrong, which it always does.

So, who will the Yankees hire? The Mets guy?

When I heard his contract wasn't renewed prior to the season, I assumed this was it.

Curious whether he wasn't sure he wanted to come back? Thinking about Maturin's theory, could Jeter pull the trigger in Miami?

This makes perfect sense.

With the Steinbrenner's (spl) still in control, they'd want to keep things in-house.

Re: Joe Girardi not returning...

Today i heard several people saying that Pena would likely be promoted to manager. Those wagging tongues are also saying: Mattingly's out in Miami, but doesn't want the job in the Bronx; Jeter's bringing Girardi to Miami; Stanton wants out of Miami; Harper wants to be in pinstripes by July. I've also heard that the Yankees upper brass could keep Pena happy by promoting him to bench coach, if there's another person they particularly want for manager.

Re: Joe Girardi not returning...

There's also been some chatter about David Cone as manager or pitching coach.
