LOST Theories So you think you know some secrets of the island? Maybe you can explain everything. If it's original and you can back it up, we'd love to hear it.

Re: LOST Theories Updated Posting Guidelines/Forum Discussion

It's been suggested in the past that the original poster of popular (and many pages long) theories udate the first post with a brief synopsis of the conversation to date. (Then updating the title to indicate that.)

The thought is that many people may feel reluctant to join in the discussion on sizeable threads. By providing a synopsis, other people may read that and jump into the conversation at that point.

What are your thoughts about this idea? Is it something we can work on during the hiatus?

I really like that, Clay. I enjoy reading the theories, but it can get cumbersome to read through so much. It is nice seeing the evolution through dialogue; a synopsis in the first post would make it more inviting to get into the meat of things.

A synopsis in the first post would be fine, as long as there was a link to skip the discussion prior to the synopsis.

Personally I prefer an in-stream synopsis that's linked from the first post (example: + the Inverse Problem with 595 posts has a link to a season 4 reset in post 544) - I feel this method makes it easier to reply to the OP's latest synopsis.

I still think that a theory isn't worth a crap if you can't sum it up intelligently in three sentences or less.

Re: LOST Theories Updated Posting Guidelines/Forum Discussion

Yes Demore Skag and MaggiePixel a synopsis in the first post or a link like Homer has done with the Inverse Theory are both good ways to handle it. I can approach the original poster for some of the threads but other threads have original posters that no longer frequent our board. So, perhaps we can develop a small group of posters who would be willing to write the synosis for some of the threads?

Vonne, I agree that most original theories can be summed up in about three sentences but I don't think the thread conversation can be. A good discussion will build on the original theory and develop it, so that it grows beyond the orginal speculation. The synopsis should include the original premise and I would think any new developments and twists.

Oh, yeah, I realize that they can evolve with time. I'm just throwing my enthusiastic support behind having a synopsis.

I can do mine.

Re: LOST Theories Updated Posting Guidelines/Forum Discussion

Is there any thought about grouping similar threads w/in the categories?
perhaps w/ tags re: thread focus - characters, events, wierd happenings, overall story.
Searching can be ultra time consuming and I've noticed many posters covering previously discussed material; which is fine b/c a new perspective is always good but often it's repeat.
Anything that provides more summary is good.

That's what our theories index does.

it does but it's a static page that requires maintenance; is there any way to use those groupings w/in the Lost Theories sub forums to show last updates/poster/OP/etc...?

Re: LOST Theories Updated Posting Guidelines/Forum Discussion

That sounds like a world of confusion.
