Jake "Raging Bull" LaMotta has died.

Former midweight world champion Jake LaMotta has died at 96. Many of us came to know of Mr LaMotta through Robert DeNiro's Oscar winning performance in the 1980's movie Raging Bull.

"There's no way I'm going down. I go down for nobody."

Godspeed, sir.

Wow. I had no idea he was still alive. What a tough s.o.b.

R.I.P. Mr. LaMotta.

Re: Jake "Raging Bull" LaMotta has died.

BTW, AZ that line you quoted from the movie... I've never heard it confirmed but i've long believed that it's intended to represent one side of the Catch-22 that was pro boxing for the fighters during that era; with the other end being from an earlier film, On The Waterfront's most famous scene...
Spoiler: on the waterfront with Charlie and Terry
Quote:
Charlie: Look, kid, I - how much you weigh, son? When you weighed one hundred and sixty-eight pounds you were beautiful. You coulda been another Billy Conn, and that skunk we got you for a manager, he brought you along too fast.
Terry: It wasn't him, Charley, it was you. Remember that night in the Garden you came down to my dressing room and you said, "Kid, this ain't your night. We're going for the price on Wilson." You remember that? "This ain't your night"! My night! I coulda taken Wilson apart! So what happens? He gets the title shot outdoors on the ballpark and what do I get? A one-way ticket to Palooka-ville! You was my brother, Charley, you shoulda looked out for me a little bit. You shoulda taken care of me just a little bit so I wouldn't have to take them dives for the short-end money.
Charlie: Oh I had some bets down for you. You saw some money.
Terry: You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it. It was you, Charley.

Raging Bull, is one of the best movies ever made. And, Bobby DeNiro's portrayal of Jake LaMotta put him on the map.

R.I.P.

You're right, I would never have heard of LaMotta if it weren't for the film.

Re: Jake "Raging Bull" LaMotta has died.

My mom was a huge LaMotta fan. She was utterly beside herself when she heard DeNiro was cast in the lead.

She gave up on baseball when Da Bums moved out west. I was living in Vero Beach in 2005 (i think, coulda been 03-05) and she came to visit. I planned to surprise her with tickets to Dodgertown (it was after spring training moved but before D-Town did). She wouldn't go. She utilized parts of the English language which are still not allowed on this forum.

Other than that, she'd root for Earnhardt Sr back in the day but didn't really watch the races. Sports just didn't do much for her, except LaMotta. She just had a thing for guy.
