Re: this or that

I'm going to see the play "Let the Right One In" and think I will much prefer that... the play version.
Didn't see the movie of this, but read the synopsis which told of many accolades for the European film. The story line sounds a bit rough for me, but I am told by one of the play actors that it is not so graphic in the play. We'll see.

So in this circumstance I choose play, however like you say Mr Mo, movies are a lot more accessible. You get to pick a this or that now.

Re: this or that

Tom Hanks over the other two combined. I don't mean that as an insult to anyone, but rather as very high praise for one.

Edgar Varese or John Cage?

Re: this or that

Highly influential 20th cenrtury sentury composers. Both were leaders in the avant-garde field.

Varese worked a lot in the foundations of electronic music and his work was also very influential for (much later) noise-rock groups like et. al. Sonic Youth, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, Dinosaur Jr., and in a sense, pretty much everybody who ever intentionally used feedback on stage.

Cage believed strongly in the concept of "found sound." His most famous piece is often his most frequently misunderstood. It's titled 4'33", and requires a full symphony orchestra to perform. The orchestra tunes up, the conductor strikes the first measure, and for 4 minutes and 33 seconds the instruments of the orchestra are silent. Legend has it that during the premiere performance, Cage had had a hallways off to the side lined with asphalt, and that the composer himself pushed a wheelbarrow full of bricks back and forth along that hall during the 4 1/2 + minutes. Whether or not the legend is true, 4'33" brought the house down, and earned such gushing reviews as "Leaves Stravinsty as far behind as Einstein was to Pythagoras."

It's unlikely that many of the fawners truly understood what Cage was saying, which was that the world was already full of music for those who had the ears to hear.

They're both immensely influential on today's music regardless of genre, sort of like Edison and Tesla were both highly influential on today's computer programming, regardless of which type of app we speak. Like Edison and Tesla, they were very different men, with very different ways of looking at things, and without either their field would be immeasurably poorer.

Ha, forget where this game is played..... The Music Section.

Coolio or Eminem (inspired by Warty's cover twist of Gangsta's Paradise)
