Legion - FX Wednesday

LEGION
SERIES PREMIERE - WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 8, 2017

Spoiler: Premise
David Haller was diagnosed with schizophrenia at a young age, and has been a patient in various psychiatric hospitals since. After Haller has an encounter with a fellow psychiatric patient, he is confronted with the possibility that there may be more to him than mental illness.Source

Spoiler: Trailers

Spoiler: Cast
  • Dan Stevens as David Haller: The mutant son of Charles Xavier, Haller was diagnosed with schizophrenia at a young age and meets the "girl of his dreams" in a psychiatric hospital. The character has several psychic abilities, including telepathy and telekinesis. Stevens joined the series because of showrunner Noah Hawley's involvement, and after exploring the source material. He described the series as "a trip", and his character as "truly insane". Casting Stevens alleviated Hawley's concerns about focusing the series on Haller's internal issues, as "heís very vulnerable and also very strong" and can be endearing to the audience. Hawley created a 160-track playlist to help Stevens understand Hallerís mindset, which included "everything from experimental French sound design, people screaming into bins and such, to Pink Floyd and everything in between." Stevens also did extensive research on mental health to prepare for the role, talking to both sufferers and doctors. He felt this allowed him to "really [take] on board" the "vividness of the reality", and said that there are "different ways of perceiving crazy people ... it's such a misunderstood condition."
  • Rachel Keller as Syd Barrett: A "self-sufficient and street smart" young woman who "still believes in happily ever after", who becomes Haller's "girlfriend". Hawley explained, "If she touches your skin she trades places with you, her mind goes into your body and the other way around." Because of her abilities, the character is portrayed as "withdrawn", the opposite of Keller's breakout performance in the second season of Hawley's Fargo. The character is named after Roger "Syd" Barrett of the rock band Pink Floyd, whose music was an important influence on the series for Hawley.
  • Jean Smart as Melanie Bird: A demanding psychiatric therapist who uses "unconventional" methods. Smart joined the series immediately when asked by Hawley, despite knowing nothing of the show and its source material, due to her previous Emmy-nominated work with Hawley on Fargo.
  • Aubrey Plaza as Lenny Busker: Haller's friend who is an "impossible optimist" despite a history of drug and alcohol abuse and a rough demeanor.
  • Jeremie Harris as Ptonomy Wallace: A former child prodigy who is "stand-offish and sardonic", one of therapist Bird's specialists. A "memory artist", Ptonomy "remembers everything, and has the ability to take people back into their own memories".
  • Amber Midthunder as Kerry Loudermilk: A savant with a "childlike sense of wonder", one of therapist Bird's specialists.
  • Katie Aselton as Amy Haller: David's older sister, who tries to remain positive despite his history of mental illness. Hawley said that she defined herself as normal "against her brother. She finds herself being looked at as if she might be crazy, as well."
  • Bill Irwin as Cary Loudermilk: A "geeky scientist", one of therapist Bird's specialists. Hawley sought out Irwin for his "playful approach to characters", but was looking to cast the actor before the character's role had been written. Hawley "had to pitch him the weird, crazy character dynamic and that the show is about memory and identity", and Irwin agreed to join the project.

Re: Legion - FX Wednesday

I have to admit, the Legion comic may've come out after I left the comic book-world, but I was so confused watching this premiere, I still don't know what I saw.

I will say in its defense, it was visually beautiful to watch. I'm also hoping the introduction, at the end of the episode, of the Jean Smart character and the other characters who broke him out, will bring some understanding to the series. Oh Truff!

You saw a powerful young man, whose gifts have been denied and who has been deemed insane due to his inability to understand and control his gifts.

I think the voices he hears are other people's thoughts and the images he sees are his mind's interpretation of events that it is aware of without physically witnessing. It's like he's on information overload beginning at a very early age.

In addition, he can control matter and is able to make objects move around. I say that loosely because he's really not controlling his power. It appears when he becomes emotionally upset, his powers kick in and results in telekinetic activity.

What I think is going on.

Either there are humans who have mutated or evolved and have "gifts" or these humans have been altered either by aliens or the medical field.

There are apparently two groups trying to round up these people and control them. One group is represented by the people that were questioning David -- including the guy who David (telekinetically) stabs in the cheek with the pen. The other group is led by that older woman, Melanie Bird (played by actress Jean Smart) who shows up toward the end and extends her hand to David.

I think Syd Barrett, the girl who doesn't want to be touched, belongs to Melanie Bird's group and was sent into the institution to investigate or get close to David. I also think her "gift", is trading places with whoever she touches or touches her. (Think Freaky Friday where people are tranferred to other people's bodies.) That's what happened when David kissed her. David, in Syd's body, walked out of the institution. Syd, in David's body -- probably freaked out at all the incoming data and exerted David's tremendous telekinetic powers which were strong enough to send crazy licorice lady into the wall fusing her physical properties with the wall's physical properties.

I also think Dr. Kissinger is working with Bird's group. He seemed to treat Syd in a manner which suggested he was aiding her on a level greater than doctor/patient.

I have to admit this was my first reaction as well.

This post is really helpful. I think I understood most of that, but my thoughts on it weren't so organized.

Re: Legion - FX Wednesday

Well, I've been schooled!

Spoiler: comic book info
My son asked me if I was going to watch this series and I told him about the first episode and what I thought was going on.

He told me that David aka Legion (Yes, that's his name) is actually an X-Men comic book character. He said Legion is named that because he has multiple personalities. (I did get a Mr. Robot vibe about him. )

He also said Legion is significantly more powerful than Xavier and could potentially even rip open dimensions!

So, if TPTB follow the comic books, David or Legion is indeed insane. I like it!

In mentioning the X-Men in your spoiler info, ask your son is David pre-mutant? In essence, did he appear before any of the other X-Men (Magneto, Storm, Wolverine, etc.)?

That was cinematically nice to watch.

This was the only part of the episode that made sense. And, as of now, this is the only part of the series I'm looking forward to.

I loved this portion of the episode.

Their relationship was the only thing I understood, and it was fun to watch. Holding each others hands by holding a towel between them was actually romantic.

In the comic book universe .... (which we don't know if this series will have the same universe. It could create its own history.) ...

Spoiler: David/Legion is ...
Xavier's son.
