LOST Theories So you think you know some secrets of the island? Maybe you can explain everything. If it's original and you can back it up, we'd love to hear it.

LOST Theories Updated Posting Guidelines/Forum Discussion

There are plenty of places to discuss Lost on this board, but Theories should be a little more focused.

What is a theory?

A theory both advances relevant questions and offers answers for those questions, backed up by evidence from the show or references.

These questions and answers may satisfy some and irritate others.

They may open up more questions or spur exploration of lines of thought not previously considered.

An idea need not explain every facet of the show in order to be considered a theory for forum purposes. But the idea should have some relevance to some aspect of the show, purport to explain it, and be grounded in some aspect of what we think we know.

Mere questions, observations, and what-ifs, without some sort of further development or analysis, likely will not be considered as meeting the criteria for T&S theories.

Re: LOST Theories and TLE - Revised Posting Guidelines

The recent adjustments to the Board layout have prompted an update to the posting guidelines with regard to the new Theories Forum. The revised posting recommendations are derived from a combination of staff discussions and user feedback.

1. WMT/TLE tags are no longer necessary for TLE-based theories.
Threads where TLE is a primary facet of the theory should be started in TLE-Theories. These threads do not need tags inside posts. (TLE-based threads started in LOST-Theories will be moved to TLE-T).

2. Posts in LOST-Theories can have TLE information in...
...providing it is appropriately tagged - and, crucially - it doesn't adversely affect the direction of the thread. For example, posting, "That isn't the case because.....<TLE tagged info>" may unfairly alter the direction of the thread or end the discussion entirely. Such posts will probably get deleted or moved by a moderator to an appropriate TLE-T thread (the user will be informed via PM of this action)

3. Threads that get too bogged down with TLE references...
...will be re-worked by a moderator in order to return the thread to its original theme or direction - this is only fair to the Original Poster (OP). Perhaps you've read threads where tagging of any kind has become prolific, making it hard to follow due to the flow of the narrative constantly being broken by tagged entries.
How much is 'bogged down'? The odd post here and there is fine; 3 out of 10 successive posts is probably acceptable; 7 out of 10 posts is probably too much. This will be done on a case by case basis, and will rely on the judgement of the moderator.
In an attempt to boost TLE-T traffic, members can:

4 a. Parallel-Post a TLE-supported theory in LOST-T (but without the TLE references).
This will allow threads that are LOST Theories in their own right to be posted as normal, whilst also allowing it to be re-posted in TLE, with additional supporting information, for those that are keen to learn more outside the sphere of the TV show.
OR

4 b. Post an 'alert thread' in LOST-T about a new thread in TLE-T.
For example, Truff's Rousseau thread, which is paralleled, could have been posted as an alert instead, "New thread started in TLE-T about Danielle and how she has been lying all along". The new alert title would need to be kept vague enough so as not to reveal explicit TLE info, so keep it generic.
Thanks - mav.

Re: LOST Theories Updated Posting Guidelines 3/04/08

Good Evening Everyone!

Well, it looks like I'm the new T&S mod.

I updated the guidelines -- nothing new -- just information that was inadvertently left out. I also combined some things and unstickied others. That gives us a little more room for discussion threads on the first page.

I'm going to leave this thread open in case anyone has any questions or comments.

Oh Neill, I think you are having a flash forward. Obviously you've been wounded in some future theories debate.

Re: LOST Theories Updated Posting Guidelines 3/04/08

There have been a couple of instances lately of people changing their thread titles. There's no rule against it but I do want to point out that you do the thread a disservice.

People following the theory become confused and may not be able to find it when searching thread titles.

If the thread has been indexed, anyone searching the index for the thread won't be able to find it as the name will have changed.

So, you might want to consider leaving the thread title as is or adding an update post # .

The ones I like are those who add their own "+."

Zenodotus confided in me that he laughs and laughs.

And then ignores them.

Maybe people don't realize what the "+" means and think they are supposed to title the threads that way?

There's a sticky that explains about the + sign. You could bump it.
