Fargo
Season Premiere
S03E01, "The Law of Vacant Places"
Wednesday, April 19, 2017
10/9c - FX

About Season 3
More:
Set in 2010, the third installment of Fargo centers on “Emmit Stussy” and his slightly younger brother “Ray” (Ewan McGregor in dual roles).

Emmit, the “Parking Lot King of Minnesota,” is a handsome, self-made real estate mogul with a perfect family – a real American success story. His slightly younger brother Ray is more of a cautionary tale. Wilted from a lifetime of living in Emmit’s shadow, Ray is a balding, pot-bellied parole officer with a huge chip on his shoulder about the hand he’s been dealt – and he blames his brother.

The only bright spot in Ray’s life is the love of a not-so-good woman, “Nikki Swango” (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), one of his parolees. Nikki has brains, beauty and a deep and abiding passion for competitive bridge. She decides to help Ray turn his fortunes around, by essentially stealing back his good karma. Unsurprisingly, things quickly get out of hand and petty theft leads to murder.

When the mayhem crosses county lines, Eden Valley Police Chief “Gloria Burgle” (Carrie Coon), a newly divorced mother, is called upon to investigate. Normally steady and imperturbable, Gloria is shaken when the case takes an unexpectedly personal turn. Meanwhile, Emmit’s perfect life is upended when he receives an unwelcome business proposal from a mysterious loner and true capitalist, “V.M. Varga” (David Thewlis), whose bosses plan to become business partners with “The Parking Lot King,” whether Emmit likes it or not.

Emmy® Award winning Executive Producers Noah Hawley (showrunner/writer/director), Joel & Ethan Coen, Warren Littlefield and John Cameron all return for the third installment of the 10-episode limited series. Fargo is produced by MGM Television and FX Productions, with MGM Television serving as the lead studio. Source

Any thoughts on what the opening scene (East Berlin 1988) had to do with the rest of the show (Minnesota 2010)?

No clue. Could the young man being questioned in Berlin be the same man years later refusing the million dollar loan payback?

That's a possibility I hadn't thought of. I don't think it can be either one of Ewan McGregor's characters or his father. I get the feeling that opening scene in East Berlin won't make sense until the very end of the season.

My only thoughts on that scene (at this point) is that it foreshadows the other situation(s) of mistaken identity in Minnesota. The German interrogator was unbelievably obtuse when accusing the man of being the 20 year old in question. It was obviously a case of mistaken identity and nothing that man said could dissuade the German interrogator with tunnel vision.

The old man -- Ennis Stussy
Odd that no one seems to be able to connect the last name to Emmit and Ray -- especially Emmit and Ray.
Odd that Gloria, the sheriff who is no longer a sheriff, maintains a relationship with her stepfather -- who was her stepfather for 4 years -- 4 years! Gloria mentions she was 6 when her mother married him and 10 when they divorced.
Why would Ennis hide his books in a locked box under his floorboards? They were all paperback and therefore not first editions -- plus they were dog-eared.

Emmit Stussy -- The Parking Lot King
Varga (David Thewlis is such a delicious villain!) says they've been keeping their eye on Emmit and his business for a long time. I wonder how long they've been watching him and was it for the opportunity to worm their way into his business to launder money or were they watching him for some other reason?

Ray Stussy
Why did Nikki really make a play for Ray? Did she really fall in love with her parole officer? Or ... is she after much more than a card-playing partner?

I'm enjoying the season so far and as always -- very intrigued as the plot unfolds.
