There were two and a half Tudor queens (counting poor Lady Jane Grey), but H8 did his best/worst to avoid that happening. So bah to any credit to Hal for that.

Credit where credit is due to the current Prince Harry, for talking publicly about how counseling helped him deal with the death of his mother, Princess Diana. It's hard enough to struggle through things as a private person, let alone having the whole world watching. Not sure he's even a Windsor (although as a Spencer he descends from a line that's more truly English than the Saxe-Coburg and Gothas could ever hope to be), but his instinct to encourage others to find help shows there must be some York in there somewhere.

Re: Richard III

Yes, total kudos to Prince Harry for admitting that.
Counseling helps. There is no shame in that.

I hope this gives others the courage to seek this out when they are at a loss in their life.

Re: Richard III

Anyone mind if I just start calling him "Hatchi"? That's Japanese for "eight", or one of, and also a common given name for dogs so it's considered an insult to call a person that.

ETA: on the other hand, Japanese for three is san, also the default honorific, which is why in some Japanese posting boards people will put a "3" at the end of their name as a pun. In the case of So-and-so III it's pronounced san-se. Of course, Richard would have the honorific "Sama".

Re: Richard III

Anyone else watching The White Princess? I think Maturin might enjoy it, it has some very anti Tudor leanings.

Re: Richard III

I have zero interest in watching anything with Margaret Damn Beaufort in it. It must be fun for the actress (who also played Catelyn Stark and Hermione Granger's mum in the Harry Potter movies) to get to dig into such a villainous role. Have they covered her creepster relationship with her son, who was only 13 years younger than she was?

If it's an insult, Hatchi works for me. No surprise that "3" represents honor and respect. It would be interesting to look up how many folks in medieval England were aware of Japan or much of anything outside of Europe. The old kingdoms (Mercia, Wessex, etc.) still viewed each other with some suspicion.

Re: Richard III

"Queen" Elizabeth II celebrated her 111th birthday today by firing off a bunch of guns or something. She actually has two birthdays: today's (her actual birthdate), and an official one on June 17. The second one was started by King George II in 1748 because his birfday was in November and he felt it was too cold for his parade, which is pretty wimpydoodle.

EII visited the Leicester Cathedral last Thursday for a Maundy Thursday ceremony that dates back to medieval times. Originally, the monarchs washed the feet of the poor, but now they just hand out little bags of money to a pre-selected group of honorees. It went fine, except for that embarrassing thing where the Leicestudor officials kept trying to get in line to get an extra bag o' dough. She doesn't seem to have visited Richard's tomb -- probably too embarrassed to show up as a usurper right in front of him. :/

Re: Richard III

Well, she's not actually Queen anymore, or so i've been lead to believe. She's the new queen mum, isn't she?

Well, to be honest, i wasn't trying to credit H8, i was saying that the Tudor lineage produced female morachs in spite of him, and that i think that reflects fairly well on the House of Tudor as a whole.
