Re: What's New/The Postman Always Emails Once

I might teach 6th grade math.

My friend Jamie's husband teaches 6th grade math out in the sticks, and they don't have another teacher for that subject (have a sub right now). So apparently they asked him if he knew anyone who is a teacher.
He says that not being certified in math is okay as long as I can pass the Praxis (which I'm sure I can). Although I have to shell out 120 bucks for the test.

Downsides:
-- It's an hour and fifteen min. drive away.
-- It's a slight pay cut, bc rural areas don't pay as well.
-- It's math.

Upsides:
-- I could carpool with him so I wouldn't have to drive my van.
-- It would be more pay than my current salary of $0.00
-- He has all of the lesson plans already. All of them. I would not have to do a lick of planning. He says that he usually gets all of his grading done during planning period, so he never takes work home ever (I could also do grading in the car during the commute, if I had to)-- so when I'm home, I would just be home and not working. That would seriously be a big change, to just go to work, teach a lesson plan, come home.
-- He says that the staff is wonderful, the admin is cool, he loves the kids. It would be a different environment, but not an unfamiliar one to me-- I grew up in a very similar county so I get the "rural poverty" schools, I went to one.

So yeah, I *want* to teach history, but it's near the end of September and I just need a frickin job, doing anything. And, I've tutored math before and liked it a lot-- regardless of the subject, the fun part of the job is explaining stuff to someone and having them understand it.
The drive is a serious thing. I would be leaving my house at 5:45 am and getting home shortly after 5 pm. It's a lot of time to be away from home. But, the idea of not bringing work home with me is really, really appealing and might make it worth it. Since I'd be riding, not driving, I could just knit a lot of blankets.

So that's where I'm at right now.

What's with all these stupid schools not hiring you to teach history??

The drive would suck, but it is only a year - actually 8.5 months - and it would be more experience under your belt, making you that much more hireable next year. Definite plus one for math correcting being so much easier than any other subject. Particularly sixth grade math. While you would be away from your kids a lot, when you were home, you'd be totally available. And while you would need to do some planning on Sunday nights (look at the lesson for Monday, for god's sake!), it wouldn't be much, so your weekends would be almost completely family time.
At least go for the interview.

And Crissy, Congratulations!!

And my news is that my youngest is back at school after being home for a WEEK!!! Cold/walking pneumonia/asthma. But much, much better now. And I know he's better because he's suddenly all ornery and angry again. There was an upside to him feeling crappy.

Warty, you might want brd at the beach house - he made homemade pretzels last night and they were *really* good. Of course he bitched and moaned almost the whole time he was making them (I'm sorry - whose idea was this??) because it took longer and was harder than it showed on the video. Good life lesson there.

Morning all! Oh my head. Too much wine.

Congrats Crissy that is so exciting! Just saw on FB.

Glad your son is better brdmom

I'd say go for it, Vonne. If you're not driving it won't be too bad.
