How did everyone die at different times?

How did everyone die at different time in the flash sideways if they were all alive on the same day before going to the church?

Also, what did Locke mean when he said Jack didn't have a son?

Re: How did everyone die at different times?

In the final season, the story was split between the life they lead while alive on Earth and the one they were leading in a purgatory state of existence. The time of their death in “our reality” had no impact upon their life in the purgatory state, because apparently time as we know it does not exist there.

When John claims Jack doesn’t have a son he is referring to his life in “our reality.”

In my opinion Jack’s son and seeming immediate loss of him following Jack’s realization that he is dead represents one of the most baffling aspects of the program.

For example, would Jack’s experience of David, regardless of the reality in which he experienced him, not mean that Jack DOES have a son? Were the writers trying to tell us that the characters were no longer experiencing feeling and emotion in their purgatory state?

I think there is ample evidence that the main point of the purgatory state WAS to feel and continue experiencing existence, despite being dead. Would Jack not have insisted on brining David along for the ride into the great white light of the beyond? And what about Juliet’s feelings for her son? Yikes . . .

I could go further, but the last two seasons strayed far too close to the Mountains of Madness for my taste.

Re: How did everyone die at different times?

All five fingers in our hands are they same? Its natures law that all die at different times. Due to a wide variety of reasons some seek death, considering it the only solution. Others try to delay the inevitable through good health. Still others tragically lose their lives through time and chance. Sometimes disease or other illnesses bring a death sentence, leaving a person with nothing to do but wait for the end.
